Process, process, process! āš¼ When I was younger, I really loved pushing myself to make things as realistic as possible. In high school, I was first introduced to charcoal ā Iād spend hours trying to create realistic still lifes using only shadows, highlights, and shapes. Outside of school, art classes helped me to draw from references, I remember trying to replicate Georgia OāKeeffe and Edward Hopper paintings. šØ Learning how to draw from life and reference inspiration has been such a huge help for Dorieās project. š°
Now working digitally, I pull colors directly from the reference photos
@doriegreenspan and
@marymdodd would send me from their kitchen ā photos of test cake after test cake until they landed on the one that would make it into the book. It was interesting to really trust the photography⦠sometimes what you think is a light brown highlight is actually a soft purple-grey, or those yellow shadows turn out to be a dusty olive. š
This project was so rewarding in so many ways. I loved being challenged (and challenging myself) to honor Dorieās cakes as closely as possible, while still keeping that illustrative look and feel. I hope you enjoy the illustrations and recipes as much as I loved drawing them ā and as much as Dorie loved baking them. The book officially publishes October 21, and Iāll be at both NYC events below!
