Warm wood tones were introduced throughout the building to warm up the concrete and glass palette and connect the interiors to the forested vistas seen on every level. We explored a variety of ways to utilize the wood, bringing creative textures to the lobby installation and donor signage.

The grand windows on UW’s Interdisciplinary Engineering Building presented a perfect location for large numbers to clearly explain the above and below ground levels. That same visual system was then translated onto directionals and directories throughout the building, with the same restrained typographic palette. 📸 @nat_orourke_art

New project — Signage and placemaking for University of Washington Interdisciplinary Engineering Building (IEB).
This cool, inviting space designed by @kierantimberlake quickly become a hub for students across the College of Engineering.The 76,000 sq ft IEB features new, modern spaces for collaborative learning, acting as an informal academic hub for undergraduate engineering majors.
One feature of the building is the natural light and views to the outdoors. We created a low-key wayfinding system that integrates with the architectural palette and helps students move around this brand new building.

Signage installation has begun at the latest addition to the SAAS Campus! As part of our collaboration with @lmnarchitects , we developed a full suite of wayfinding signage and donor recognition for the new Upper School building. Luckily, the campus is less than two blocks from our studio so we have a front row seat to the progress.

Marta Bernstein is a designer, researcher, teacher and co-founder of the Italian digital type foundry CAST. She’s creative director at Studio Matthews, a Seattle-based, woman-owned practice of designers, teachers, and makers. She’s taught students at USC Roski, the Polytechnic University in Milan, and the University of Navarra. Type and typography are her true passions and the common threads of all her projects. She has a soft spot for 19th century type, which she’s been researching for more than a decade. She’s given talks at Typographics, ATypI, the Letterform Archive, and the Cooper Union. She’s a member of the Nebiolo History Project, a group of researchers studying the history of Italy’s most prominent type foundry. She holds a MDes in type design from Type and Media (KABK).

Go explore! We worked with Alexandria Real Estate to develop a signage scheme for their Eastlake life sciences hub. This vibrant Seattle neighborhood has historically been home to innovation and industry, including building ships that traveled the world. Now, it’s evolving as an international hub for commercial life science, leading the charge in fields of immunology, cell therapy, infectious disease, and genomics.
We helped to unify a diverse set of Alexandria buildings through consistent address signs. These pop up from planters and wrap concrete walls, helping to direct visitors around the sprawling urban campus. Lively map signs point the community to parks, trails, and cultural destinations around the area.

New science-themed murals created as part of a project to enliven Alexandria life sciences district in the heart of Seattle’s Eastlake neighborhood.
One mural explores forms in nature from micro to macro: bacteria, ferns, phytoplankton, an insect’s wing, and even slime mold become beautiful at gargantuan scale.

New murals depict themes of science and nature, including this one describing useful medicinal compounds that can be derived from Pacific Northwest plants.
