Henry’s back with another bonkers Lego print, consistently proving why he’s the best Lego printer in this house! This croc was built after having a deep connection with the crocodile at our zoo, who we have lovingly named Beef Cheeks. Sometimes he floats right up next to the glass and Henry is able to get within 0.5 inches of his rows of glistening teeth (behind glass, of course 😁).
Henry was able to print an edition of 14 on the press pretty much by himself! Rolling out the ink is his favorite part. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the press is great for kids! Very safe and accessible. He says he wants to sell some prints - is that something you guys would be interested in?? 🐊 Baby’s first print sale 🥹 ***EDIT: so this video kinda blew up lol!! I am IN LOVE with my new metal type! (It’s mine, of course, not Steve’s 😛) There are so many unique cuts and beautiful type faces. I try to experiment with different printing mediums to find accessible materials for you guys (legos, wood cutouts, etc) and it is usually pretty tricky to get those to print really well. But these are a different story. They print sooo smooth, like butter. Almost like they were made for this. Which of course they were. 😄
This particular quote (by H L Mencken or AJ Liebling, there is some debate about that) was said back in the day when the only way to get your message out was by letterpress. The world is a very different place now but it still highlights the value of having a press which is why we are committed to providing affordable and accessible printing presses. Whether you buy a press kit from us or use the open source laser cutter instructions on our website, we want everyone to have the opportunity to own a press. 💕

Hello! 👋 We have a bunch of new followers on here after the giveaway so I thought it was time for another little introduction post!
The Provisional Press is made up of Steve and Liz Garst - that’s us! 😊 Steve has been working on a design for a wooden proof press for about 7 years, slowly gathering and testing materials and trying to figure out what would be best to use. Once our son Henry was born, followed by Clara shortly after, all thoughts of press plans were put on the back burner. In the summer of 2019 he picked them back up again and by November he had a workable press. His original plan was to release laser cut instructions so that anyone with access to a laser cutter and a hardware store could build and operate a press at home.
Then 2020 happened and all of a sudden letterpress and print students all over the country had lost access to their school print shops. A group of educators put together by Erin Beckloff (@ebecks ) reached out to ask if press kits could be made and sent to their students to continue learning during the lockdown. Together with Scott Moore of @moorewoodtype we made 120 press kits in a few weeks. So many asked if we would continue to offer kits to the public. And so the Provisional Press was born! 1000+ kits later and our mission is still the same - get as many easy-to-build, portable presses into the hands of as many printers as we can.
Well, as long as our laser doesn’t break. And a car doesn’t drive into our living room! 🙄 (Yeah that happened 😂) My laser parts are in Illinois at this point… maybe we will get them tomorrow? I’ve been seeing these flat tile mosaics at Michael’s and I had to know: will they print? 🍄 There were just over 2,000 tiles in the box and at a great price. They’d be a great place to start for any aspiring LEGO printers!

Happy April!! So can you print stamps from the craft store on the press? Yes!! 🙌 Simply remove the metal bed and they’re the perfect height for printing. They work really well with oil based ink too! Cleanup with vegetable oil and you’re good to go.

Would you guys be interested in a behind the scenes peek at manufacturing pieces? I sometimes feel like I could do it in my sleep, if not for all the power tools and other dangerous equipment. Having been to the ER twice for almost cutting my fingers off, I’d say that’s a good call!
