One of the reasons narcissistic abuse is so confusing… is because people often focus only on the ending. The manipulation. The blame shifting. The gaslighting. The smear campaign. But what makes these dynamics so psychologically disorienting… is that they usually begin with connection. Attention. Validation. Intensity. Future promises. Feeling chosen. That’s what creates the attachment. So by the time the confusion starts, the nervous system is already emotionally invested in trying to get back to the version of the relationship that existed in the beginning. We just held a screening of *Narcissist’s Playbook* at UCLA’s Friends of the Semel Institute Open Mind Series in Los Angeles, and it was phenomenal. @thenarcissistsplaybook We were completely booked out. Dozens of people couldn’t get in! That’s a quality problem to have. After five years of hard work, it was deeply gratifying to stand in a room full of mental health experts and clinicians and watch them experience what we’ve been building. The road here wasn’t easy. Long, difficult, full of ups and downs, and met with serious pushback. Hollywood doesn’t want to get behind this film. It’s confrontational for those who carry this pathology, and it certainly irritates their demons. For survivors and those who understand how this works, the feedback was extraordinary. The Q&A featured myself, producers Scott Altomare and Lyn Lear, the remarkable Dr. Ramani, and was moderated by Clinical Neuropsychologist Professor April Thames. Also in attendance was one our subjects, Doug Buggle @dougbuggle @saltosea @lyndlear @dr_april_thames @uclafriendsofsemel @doctorramani @drramaninetwork The thing I hoped and dreamed would happen is happening. When the film ends, people don’t rush out. They sit, stunned, informed... and then they turn to the person next to them and start talking. Dr. Ramani said it perfectly... abuse happens in relationship to people, and therefore healing has to happen in relationship to people. Cory, Bentinho Massaro’s right-hand woman, the person who kept the entire operation running, says to Keilan McNeil, with complete sincerity, that Bentinho is more spiritually advanced than Jesus. Keilan’s response: “Where the fuck am I?” It’s one of the moments that starts cracking things open for him. Not the only one. There had been the distortion readings, the unpaid work, the fog of war, watching people get psychologically dismantled in front of him. And then, in the same final meeting, Bentinho points to his bedroom and tells Keilan that if they go in there together, he would feel Closer to God than he ever has in his life. A sexual proposition masked as a spiritual experience. Framed as healing. Framed as transmission. Framed as a gift the universe is offering him. This is not unique to Bentinho. It is one of the oldest moves in the high-control playbook. The leader’s body becomes sacred. Physical contact with him becomes a pathway to God. And refusing that contact becomes evidence of your own spiritual limitation.
