Weeks posts
It’s been quite a while since my good friend/ radio & music industry legend @walsh8009 and I first discussed launching a music industry podcast. Well, now @the_money_trench (named after the infamous Hunter S Thompson misquote about the music business) is finally here: a brand new, weekly podcast about the most exciting industry on the planet, presented by me and exec produced by Mike. Every Monday, we’ll round up the week’s big industry stories and then take a deep dive into the career of one of the industry’s most interesting and influential executives. There will also be a weekly newsletter, which you can sign up for on the website. Our first episode will “drop” on Monday June 24 and I’d love it if you’d give it a listen wherever you get your podcasts. We hope TMT will join the other great music industry podcasts out there – my favourites include Tim Ingham’s The MBW Podcast, @variety ‘s Strictly Business and @steve_lamacq & @stuartdredge ‘s The Price Of Music – in becoming an essential part of your music industry week. Huge thanks, of course, go to Mike for finally getting this over the line; to our sponsor @ppl_uk for their backing; our amazing production partners @tapenotes (check out their brilliant podcast if you haven’t already); the excellent team of @nickboberts and @ailsaharper at @aimlessplay (who come highly recommended for any socials and campaigns work you might need); the PR gurus at @fourthpillarco ; @sennheiser for some top gear; the awesome @tomasmithmusic for the theme music; and @neilvestrini at @junkheadstudio for designing the uber-cool TMT logo. Thanks also to the execs who helped us out with pilot episodes and everyone who’s already agreed to come on and chat in the coming weeks. Please let Mike and I know any further suggestions for guests (yes, you can put yourself forward!) or stories we should be covering, and hopefully see you all soon…

It’s all about @greatescapefest this week. TMT will be heading down to Brighton, where @marksutherland is hosting a conversation with @cdbaby President and all-round legend @mollydneuman on Thursday at 1pm at the Leonardo – come down! And hit us up if you have hot new acts you want us to check out (or free pints you’d like us to drink!).

As CEO of the @officialcharts Company for almost 20 years, @martinltalbot had to adapt the chart to huge changes in how people consume music. And he tells TMT that the streaming becoming the dominant format had a huge knock-on effect for the entire music industry…

This week’s podcast guest’s knowledge extends across every genre of music and every facet of the music industry. @martinltalbot has just wrapped up an incredible run at the @officialcharts Company, where he had the vision and drive to keep the uniquely culturally important UK chart relevant in an ever-changing consumption landscape, and an increasingly globalised industry. And it was great to hear more about his own personal journey through the biz from the Hackney Gazette to NME to Music Week – and a bit about what he’s got planned next.

What a @rosalia.vt show at The O2 last night. Opera meets ballet meets theatre meets carnival meets club culture, faultlessly delivered by a Madonna/Beyonce-level superstar who somehow still seems like she’d be a laugh down the pub. And a Cara Delevingne ‘confession’ cameo. En pointe and on point throughout. Asombrosa!

This week’s podcast was recorded live in front of an appreciative crowd at the @bpi_music ’s ‘In Tune With Tomorrow’ programme at @soundcityplus . Our guest is BPI chair, musician and broadcaster – amongst many other things – @yolandabrown . YolanDa is a remarkable character and brought her unique energy as we talked about everything from AI and streaming remuneration to music education and why you should never rely on a backing track when you’re playing a Valentine’s Day gig! Tune in!
