Join us this Wednesday April 29 for a conversation between Mark Dear and Gonçalo Neto.
Both artists work primarily through drawing, using it as a foundation to explore broader aspects of their practices. In this discussion, they will reflect on process, influence, and the evolving role of drawing within their work.
Mark Dear’s practice centres on drawing. Without formal training, he works instinctively, developing a playful yet expressive style characterised by loose lines, bold strokes, vivid colour, and exaggerated figures. His work balances realism with a romantic sensibility to explore symbolism, identity, and cross-cultural references.
Gonçalo Neto’s practice is rooted in drawing, with a keen ability to render emotion and atmosphere through line and tone. His work now extends across drawing, print, and sound. His most recent project, Portal, is a 36-page hand-illustrated comic following a man on an unexpected psychedelic journey through his own mind. Neto is also a music producer and co-runs the industrial sonics label SELN Recordings with Conrad Pack.
The event begins at 7pm and is open to the public.
On Tuesday 28th October, @pesoneto_ and @mark__dear will be leading a comic book workshop for Rythm Mastr: The Chronicles, currently on view at The Tabernacle. Taking inspiration from the exhibition and the world-building of Kerry James Marshall’s iconic comic project, this workshop will introduce participants to the process of comic creation– from narrative building to character development. You’ll learn about Gonçalo and Mark’s art practices and how they relate to comics and the wider of world of drawing. They’ll also guide participants through creating their own comic strips.
The workshop is free and is from 6-8pm at The Tabernacle. Spaces are limited so please make sure to RSVP. Further information through link in bio.
