HER COUNTRY has been out for a little over two weeks now and I’d love to know what parts you’re loving, hating, getting enraged by and what music you’re discovering. And if you dig it, tell a friend or your followers or your friendly neighbor or blasé cat about it - music books about women are important, music books by women are important, music books about country music are important. #hercountry #countrymusic #musicbooks
Sharing this news from @justwannaweekend and invoking the spirit of Lilith feels pretty perfect. Excited to announce my next book, coming from @hachettebooks : WHAT SHE NEEDS IS A GOOD DEFENSE. It’s about continuing my mission to share more stories about women musicians by women (and this time, including my own voice in the mix because how we feel and have lived with the music *matters* just as much as it does for dudes). So excited and honored to write about these musical geniuses and rock stars and an era which changed music and women and culture forever.
I like my new author photos enough I am sharing multiple online?! Helps to have a very very talented neighbor to make it happen - thanks @khakibedfordphoto !! Here’s to new books and things ahead.
Mother’s Day was fun until it wasn’t. It’s gone from a day (month?) where I think about all I have to one where I think about all I don’t. This year I’m going to try and find a balance, this second go around with her gone. If it’s a fun day for you let it be. That’s ok. If it sucks for you, I’m there with ya. So many of us are probably holding both at once. I just hope whoever my mom is reincarnated as (because that’s what she believed), they love a good shoe sale as much as Jane did.
The 2026 @acmawards nominations are out now! @marissarmoss and @josephhudaknash call out the snubs, celebrate the leaders, and ask if voters will ever get the New Artist categories right.
While it’s obviously great to see women get recognition at the ACMs today, language like this - that I keep seeing - angers me. That it’s an “era,” as if the genre hasn’t been built on the backs of women, and that they haven’t been making some of the most important and influential country music since inception. That it’s an “era” that will end. That it’s an “era” reflected in radio - see today’s mediabase Top 20 in the second slide. Women are doing the work but if the folks at labels, promo teams and beyond don’t push radio to actually reflect the desires of the listeners once and for all, this will in fact be an “era” and not a necessary corrective that isn’t about a “women led era” but a history that always includes them equally and not just white women too.
Wasn’t really prepared for these photos of @thegrooverecords being torn apart, a place where my kids grew up playing in the dirt and trading Pokémon cards while we watched bands like Tristen and Sturgill Simpson and All Them Witches play for free in the backyard (actually, my sons first concert was Sturgill there at maybe two months old). A lot of feelings about where Nashville is heading that are too big for a post but it’s a weird thing where a family can’t add a window on an old home because of historical codes but a developer can come in an take down a place in seconds because hey who cares about laws? Thinkin about what’s going down at @acmenashville today, too. Guess we’ll get another Party Fowl there maybe? Maybe artisanal tacos if we’re lucky, with 3 for 1 margaritas for the bride??? Lotta love for my town still, but damn if this didn’t get me good today.
Getting close to the finish line of the book draft that, in some ways, I’ve been writing since I was a little girl in diaries and mix tapes and fuck ups. Here’s how I got there (physically and spiritually, I guess).
