🦈🦈🦈 Happy publication day to me! I Could Be Eaten by a Shark is out today. This story started quite differently (don’t they always?), but I am so proud of the end result. This book is about understanding that not all fears and worries can be conquered. Some can hang around, and that okay too. So it’s best to try and understand it, and ultimately make some room for it, because ultimately we all have them in some form or another. The key is not to let them take over and stop us enjoying what life has to offer. Inspired by my own worries as a kid this was a little cathartic to write. I hope both kids and parents can see a little of themselves in this one. 🦈🦈🦈It’s also my second book with @markachambers so it makes it extra special. Mark added some brilliant nods to Bear vs Dragon, as well as the reappearance of a few characters. It’s publication day!!!!!! “Bear met Dragon on an old rickety bridge, over a fast flowing river…” The opening line came first, and it remained unchanged throughout the (many) versions that came after. I had such a lot of fun writing this book. But like all good things, it wasn’t easy! Static characters are a hard sell, but quoting a Jon Klassen interview where he quotes Hitchcock talking about shock vs suspense was a game changer. 💪💪💪 But picture books are a team effort: 🐻🐻🐻Thank you @markachambers for bringing the characters to life, and for adding so much fun and expression into not just them, but a few others too (check out the snail!). 🐉🐉🐉Thank you to my editor Katie Haworth @oxfordchildrens who fell in love with this story from the very beginning! I have a hard copy of the email she sent with her offer on my desk, and whenever I feel low about writing, I read it again. And then there is the other Katie at OUP - @iamkateadams who had lots of fab ideas and insight throughout and helped make the final book awesome. 🐻🐉🐻🐉And of course, thank you to James @thecatchpoles for not giving up on this story, even when it seemed like it wasn’t going anywhere. I haven’t done an author visit with pre-schoolers in a while….if I am honest when I first started author visits I found this age group really tricky. The kids are just so young…and I was so eager to do lots of things that were just too much for that age. It made me feel frustrated. Fast forward a few years (and lots more author visits) …now I’ve learned to enjoy these much more. Yes there are limitations but I found the act of simplifying things really useful. Liberating. You are going back to basis, no screens, PowerPoints, draw alongs, snazzy slide transitions. Just you and your book, a few visual aids and lots of stickers! Visited Great Ormond Street Hospital this week. Met some lovely kids, amazing parents and got to learn about the fantastic work that @greatormondst does.
