4 years ago today on 8/20/2021 I was in ICU at Mt Sinai Hospital in NYC recovering from quadruple bypass heart surgery the day before 8/19/21. I owe my life to a God through the hands Nigerian heart surgeon Dr Ahni, the head of heart surgery. Even though I was in what I thought was damn near the best shape of my life.
A family history of heart disease , on both sides was a reality I couldn’t escape . What I discovered was a little known protein Lipoprotein-a is a great contributor but the vast majority of us don’t get tested for it. Family of heart disease runs in your family, please demand getting checked and scans .
Yesterday in Kingston Jamaican on set of the film “Redeemed: A Father’s Story” of which I’m also a producer , I got to lead a very real spirit filled prayed on the power of transformation. The sermon became a very REAL one!! Videos to follow !!
My hospital stay was made bearable in part by the loyalty and dedication of one of the most selfless friends I know who was with me everyday for the week I was there @jenenyc . Love you mama Part of the recovery from surgery was daily walks with my brother @theycallmedannyboy ( Slide Three) as he too was recovering from a broken heart. We called ourselves “ The Open Hearts Club” often joined by others as walked to heal in community. This was an incredibly transformative time with so many people friends and family , health care professionals who brought me back to life! You know who are and I give thanks!
I take nothing for granted and live everyday with a fierce determination to fulfill my purpose.
Yesterday , August 19th 2021 is my “third birthday.
January 18,1983 is my “second birthday”. I was shot on this day at the age of 15.
September 17,1967 I was born.

First father son dynamic like this in the HISTORY of television finally reached American and global TV screens in 1994. Young single black male , responsible father , who’s also a cop protecting our community on a show that spoke to the world through an urban aka hip hop lens .
This type of representation was absent from the public consciousness in terms of character portrayals in mainstream media . It’s always been an honor to represent the best of us and the positive values taught to me by my father and the game I got from my older brother @therealaryoba who was a teenage dad and whom I based the character on.
Every role I’ve ever played, every character I embody , including the real life version, the goal is to always and forever vibrate on the highest frequency . “The masses are asses” was my father’s frequent refrain , always reminding us that his job was to teach us to think critically. In a world where the lie will travel faster than the truth ever could , it’s always important to remember who we are , who’s name you carry, the God that you serve and to forever walk in your purpose. “No weapons formed against us shall prosper.”
Always a great when we can bring the next generation of creatives into the fold as we continue to build the legacy of @yobadevelopment . Especially when it’s your own child. So grateful to see my daughter PriaYoba find her way into how she too can contribute to impacting the built environment , in landscaping and architecture.
Being a mentor for the last 10 years of RandyLopez @randys.revenge , from high school student to recent graduate @prattinstitute school of architecture has been a joy to watch . So grateful to have him join us on our new project after just having watched him present his senior thesis this week. . So proud you him!

The first step in addressing #deedtheft is raising awareness on what it is and how it’s executed and what can be done to prevent it .
On September 26, 2025 @yobadevelopment and @yobadevelopmentfoundation hosted our first #FlippingTheHood Pop -Up along with @newyorkstateag Letitia James as we brought community together to build bridges and work on actionable steps to address this heinous organized criminal practice of targeting our communities across this city and literally stealing our wealth. Thanks to @karen.greenwood.77 and orgs like @stopdeedtheft for putting this issue on our radar. With the help of our host @vanessafreetv and panelists @vdwdst@nyneighborhoods@marco we convened stakeholders from across the city , from both the public and private sectors , lawyers, property owners , deed theft victims , activists etc to help move the needle.
None of us can do it alone but we all can play a part in prevention and prosecution. I’m pleased to see how our public servants like city council member @chiosse and our mayor @zohrankmamdani are doing their part

A Simple Breakdown of What Just Happened to the Voting Rights Act
Yesterday the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
And most people scrolled right past it.
Our ancestors did not just ask for the right to vote. They bled for it. They died for it. And Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act was the legal shield that made sure that sacrifice meant something.
That shield is now gone.
Here is what people do not understand.
They do not need to take your ballot.
They just need to control the map. They redraw the district lines so your vote goes in and produces nothing.
This is Project 2025 in full effect.
But they cannot legislate away our economic power.
Buy Black. Bank Black. Build Black.
When they silence our vote our dollars must speak louder.
