Last night, we gathered in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal for a vigil to mourn and remember the life and legacy of Sudanese political activist, revolutionary thinker, writer and researcher Muzan Alneel. The space included people from different ethnic backgrounds and nationalities, and we were blessed to have the wonderful
@marlene.hale.58 offer indigenous drumming and words of wisdom to open and close the evening. Marlene Hale is a chef and activist from the Likhsilyu clan of the Wet'suwet'en nation, one of the first Nations in so-called Canada and Turtle Island. The diversity of the space was an embodiment of Muzan's internationalist politics and care for the liberation of all oppressed peoples of the world.
The tributes and obituaries recited all spoke to the brilliance and powerhouse that Muzan was, and to how much she meant to so many people around the world. Her family and loved ones, her comrades, but also those who have never met her but were still touched by her words and work. Comrades like Ibrahim Alsahary, Nelly Bassily, Zizi Hmd, Maysoon Elnigoumi, Sara Abbas, Shireen N. Akram-Boshar, Sara Elhassan
@bsonblast and others shared heartfelt words that touched everyone in the audience and left us with tears, some laughs in between, and a feeling of being collectively hugged by Muzan's spirit, energy and short yet extremely profound and meaningful life.
Nikki Giovanni said, "I hope to be warmed by the life I tried to live". Muzan's short presence on earth left an incredible mark and her passing had a ripple effect across the world. It is a huge loss to Sudan, her family and loved ones and everyone who knew her personally, from the streets or through the screens and prints. May her transition be warm to her soul, as warm as the life she lived, and may her family be held in love and grace in this time.
Deepest condolences to her aunt and second mother Ramtha Elias, a beloved member of our Montreal community and a co-organizer of this vigil. Deepest condolences to her parents, her siblings Misdar, Marine and Malab, her husband Ahmad. Thank you to everyone who contributed, attended in person and on zoom, and to Alternatives. انا لله و انا اليه راجعون .
