Reflecting on these treasured compositions, Smith said: “I’ve learnt as time goes on that the songwriter isn’t necessarily in charge of the songs. Sometimes it feels as if it’s the other way round, that a song will reveal itself fully when it’s ready to be sung.”
Twenty years in, and @thejohnsmith still carries himself like someone who has something to prove. Not to anyone or anything other than to the songs themselves. The British singer, songwriter and guitarist has collaborated with artists like @sarahjarosz (@imwithherband ), @thestaves , @themilkcartonkids , @lisahannigan , Patty Griffin, Joan Baez, David Gray, Tom Jones, @katherinepriddy and @jacksonbrowne .
And those are great, but for me, the magic happened as soon as he sat down in front of me, by himself, and started playing and singing his song 'The World Turns' and covers of @rthompsonmusic ’s 'Beeswing' and Rowland Jon Salley’s 'Killing The Blues' at the @mailmenstudio in Utrecht.

🚂 What a blast to record TWO songs in ONE day with Martijn from @mailmenstudio . I learned so much by watching you work and how you preserve artistic freedom while pushing me to make decisions.
😬 It was step out of my solitary comfort zone to arrange and record a song with three other friends and wonderful musicians. Thank you for your flexibility and creativity when following very professional instructions like ‘Het mag wat meer uit de bocht vliegen’ or ‘Kun je dat riedeltje ook in het snelle stukje doen?’
