This has been in the works for more than a year, but I can finally say that today I began the contract for my research project Contextualizing Artistic Practice with Artificial Intelligence. The project will be conducted at @i2ads at @fba.up thanks to funding from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through their CEEC program in support of scientific employment. Over the next three years, I will examine, intervene in, and reflect on current discourse on artificial intelligence in artistic practice. As @joanna.zylinska describes, “one of the most creative — and most needed — ways in which artists can use AI is by telling better stories about AI, while also imagining better ways of living with AI.” (2020, 31) In this project, I hope to work with other artists and thinkers to answer Joanna's appeal to tell better stories about AI. More details to come! #contextualizingartisticpracticewithartificialintelligence #fct #aiart #artificialintelligence #artisticresearch

One of the big challenges of working with and about AI is finding ways to interpret, articulate, and visualize its intricate relationships with the world. In this project, we sought to explore that difficulty. This brought us to look at how its conceptual and political dimensions may be producing new relationships to the visual, altogether, filtered and distorted through layers of data, models, and algorithms. #astructuralplanforimmitation #enginesofdifferentiation @european_media_art_platform @creativeeurope

Algorithm, Image, Art examines the historical threads that converge in visual culture. The book expands on my PhD research into deep undercurrents in the discourses behind machine learning generated images. #algorithmimageart #algorithm #AI #machine #image #digital #generative #digitalart #machinelearning #arthistory #photography

As a big Farocki fangirl, I'm ecstatic over the new issue of @e_flux : "Operativism: Labor, Automation, Agitation" edited by Elena Vogman and Matteo Pasquinelli 😍 especially Tom Holert's "Beneath the Information, the Operation: Harun Farocki and the Work of Images" SO GOOD /journal/162 Excerpt from the editorial by Vogman and @matteo.pasquinelli : this special issue of e-flux journal advocates for a return to a materialist genealogy of “operativism” —a concept that spans labor politics and scientific management throughout the twentieth century, from the Soviet avant-gardes to postwar cybernetics to modern warfare and the multiple interpretations of Harun Farocki’s “operational images.” “Operations” have been theorized primarily within the technological register of power, often obscuring other genealogies and readings that see operations as falling within the logic of cooperation in labor and social relations. While debates on the “operative ontologies” of media have foregrounded technical configurations, this issue turns to the “social machine” and the organization of labor that underwrite operations.

On Thursday, I will give a talk titled "Calculating Images" at the arteciencIA symposium in Santiago de Compostela. The conference will be streamed, so you are welcome to join us remotely. My talk is 13:00-14:00 CEST. Calculating Images Generative media has recently received a great deal of attention due to the emergence of new tools and modalities for producing and analyzing visual content. This talk examines how historical examples of producing images based on alphanumerical data give insight into current forms of algorithmic image-making. Looking at these as points of inflection that may enrich our understanding of more recent developments, such as the use of machine learning, we consider visual technologies not as a sequential progression or evolution but rather a nuanced field where computational methods have taken various forms over time.

Wow, I feel like my previous post really struck a chord, thanks so much to everyone for your enthusiasm for critical discussions on AI and art! I'm going to start posting more reading recommendations on here. Some of my favorite books didn't make it into the photo but really there are so many that it needs to just be a series. I will be working on this over the next three years in my research project “Contextualizing Artistic Practice with Artificial Intelligence”, which has been funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Let me know if I miss any “must-reads”! Here's the reading list for this stack: Eds. Ilan Manouach & Anna Engelhardt, Chimeras: Inventory of Synthetic Cognition Matteo Pasquinelli, the Eye of the Master Dan McQuillan, Resisting AI J. F. Martel, Reclaiming Art in the Age of Artifice Kate Crawford, Atlas of AI Anna Munster, Deep Aesthetics Emily M. Bender & Alex Hanna, the AI Con How to Fight Big Tech’s Hype And Create the Future We Want Grant D. Taylor, When the Machine Made Art Safiya Noble, Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism Hito Steyerl, Medium Hot. Joanna Zylinska, AI Art Margaret A. Boden and Ernest A. Edmonds, From Fingers to Digits Ed. Patricio Dávila, Diagrams of Power Sofian Audry, Art in the Age of Machine Learning #contextualizingartisticpracticewithartificialintelligence

Today I am leading a workshop at the School of Arts at @catolica_porto where I am currently an artist in residence. We will discuss methodologies to approaching AI's relevance to artistic practice. In this first session (1/3) we will do a close reading of an excerpt from The AI Con by Emily Bender and Alex Hanna. Through our discussion an analysis of the text, we will identify key issues raised by AI and proposals for how to address them. Looking forward to dig in and see where it takes us! Thanks so much to @jasgomes @luiscfernandes for hosting me! This is part of my project Matéria Escura Digital, which has received funding from @dg.artes
