Get to know our Co-Founder, Owner, and CEO, Michael Huynh! Macarons have been around for centuries, but it wasn’t popular in the US until around the 2010s. Michael’s Macadons journey started back in 2013 when Michael and his co-founder made macarons for friends for Christmas with no plan to have Macadons become what it is today. What started out as something fun and experimental turned into a real business with impactful missions In 2017, Macadons was approached by Starbucks to be featured in their Community Store program. With this opportunity, Michael decided to leave his 6-year career with Boeing to focus on the business full time. Along with the opportunity to work with Starbucks, Starbucks also sponsored Michael into the Small Business Growth Collaborative (now known nationwide as the highly accredited Ascend Program) at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business Consulting and Business Development Center. From there, Michael stopped working IN the business and started working ON the business. Up until then, it was just Michael and his co-founder with some help here and there from friends and family. It wasn’t until early 2018 that Macadons decided to grow the business and hired their first official employee, and that’s when Michael figured out what he was really passionate about - Although he loved the challenge of creating a product, getting feedback, and improving it, that wasn’t the passion. The passion came from leading, coaching, and developing his team and helping to guide them in their self-discovery journey. Now, after having been in the business for over 10 years, graduating from executive-level business programs like UW’s Ascend and SBA’s T.H.R.I.V.E. program, Michael now also finds fulfilment and great joy in sharing his experiences, past mistakes, and mentoring other small business owners. With his vision for Macadons to continue to grow, inspire, and be a positive impact to its community and anyone who interacts with it, his mission remains to create safe spaces for people to find their purpose in life. #localbusinesses #rentonwashington #macadonsseattle #entrepreneurstory #filledwithjoy

When we walk into a business, we usually only see the final product. What we don’t see are the behind the scene moments of risks and when everything could’ve fallen apart. Michael Huynh, the owner of Macadons, shared his journey of building something he was truly passionate about which first started with him leaving his long-term career at Boeing. His family’s background of Vietnamese immigrants who came to the United States through refugee camps, built the belief that the best path towards a good career was stability—not something with risk like entrepreneurship. Building Macadons meant that Michael needed to step into something completely foreign. He had to learn how to grow his business without any coaching or mentoring, all while balancing the uncertainty that came along with taking this major risk. “It was always just go to school, and get good grades, and go work for somebody, and have a stable job, but I’m happy I did not go down that route.” Michael also discussed how the business owners he sees are so attached to the necessities of running their own business that they don’t even know what resources and support systems are there to help them. Today, Macadons has become more than a café. Michael’s story represents the resilience behind small businesses and why it’s vital to have resources and support systems that are more visible to immigrant and immigrant-rooted entrepreneurs who are trying to build something of their own.
