Across India, bees come in different shapes, sizes (and swarms): wild populations of native bees like stingless, leafcutter, carpenters, and masons, as well as the non-native European honey bee.
However, more than 40 percent of honey bees in the country have disappeared during the last two decades. This is largely due to climate stressors like erratic rainfall and hotter-than-ever-before summers, as well as environmental degradation.
Despite this loss, India is now the second-largest exporter of honey globally after China, but at what cost? Read the full story by Mukta Patil (@muktavpatil ) on @TheLocavore.in website to find out—link in bio 🐝

Out at the farm, we’re seeing firsthand how the climate is shifting. Crops are acting differently. The land feels unfamiliar in ways it didn’t, just a few years ago. It’s a reminder that this isn’t a distant issue — it’s here already, changing what we’ve always known.
So it's time to do more than plant a tree🌳—
Its about growing a mindset and being conscious of what we eat, how we grow, and what we waste.
Because when we protect the planet, we protect our roots—
literally and figuratively because at the heart, we are “of the soil”… Mee Maati cha… #maaticha #earthday #everydayiseaerthday #conciousliving #zerowasteliving #zerowasteindia #climatechangeisreal
Built over four decades, sustained by nature and growing with its people, @maati_cha is revolutionizing orchard farming in Raigad by creating a regenerative, self-sustaining ecosystem. The essence of Maaticha lies in the belief that farming is a way of life - one that respects the soil, supports local communities, and nurtures biodiversity to a large extent. From honeybees pollinating native crops to permaculture practices restoring the land, every element of the Kazi Farm has been carefully cultivated for over 40 years.
Every season presents a gift - from Alphonso mangoes, and hand-ground spices to a selection of natural honey, Maaticha is farm-to-table in its purest form. It is a story of community empowerment and growing food with care, by the people, for the people.

@Maati_Cha , our new #TLpartner producer, is a family farm run by the Kazis in Ainghar, Maharashtra.
The farm has belonged to the Kazi family since the 1980s, and today, they continue to nurture it together. Each member plays a vital role—be it farming, overseeing logistics and operations, or beekeeping.
‘Maaticha’—translating to ‘of the soil’ in Marathi—reflects their deep connection to the land and commitment to traditional farming practices. “Understanding seasonality reconnects us with our food and our land, amplifying the joy of eating what is naturally meant to be eaten at that time,” says Zeeba Kazi (@_.zeeebaa ) from their marketing team.
Over four generations, Maaticha has built close ties with local farmers and tribal communities like the Thakars and Katkaris—working together during harvests, celebrating festivals, and sharing resources in times of need. This deep connection shines through in their produce and products across seasons—from their Estate Tulsi Honey to their Moringa Leaf Powder.
