Meet Maraky Vowells ✨🖌️
Maraky Vowells (They/Them) is an Ethiopian-British artist, of Amhara and Oromo descent. Their work is shaped by afro-surrealism, place-based methodologies and a commitment to liberation. Through painting, printmaking and moving image, their work marks what is healing and most meaningful, while connected to an East-African lineage of making.
Maraky has exhibited at venues such as Malcolm Smith gallery, Webb’s, George Fraser Gallery, Silo Park and Takapuna Lake House Arts Centre. In 2024 they co-won the Gerard Commissaris Scholarship and Henrietta and Lola Anne Tunbridge Award, and were published in the Anthology Everything that Moves, Moves Through Another. In 2025 they won the Board’s Choice Award for Eden Arts.
