Here’s the final work and some stills of a longer video. I wore one of my Ethiopian head scarves since this is one of our traditional weaving practises
Shell waist art, Breathe with the Ocean
Lungs of the earth
Wai roots
In my last semester of art school!
I’m (trying) to make a multi-channel moving image / film
Interviewing and Learning from my elders about Ethiopia’s anti-colonial fight and the battle of Adwa 1896 filming our conversations and projecting onto gabi
It’s harder than I thought to execute 😅 but im so grateful for this process and that I get to be hereee!
Our conversations have gone towards the queens of Ethiopia - the printed photos are Queen of Sheba and Queen Taitu - they were soo influential and Taytu was in the war and the brains behind the military
Also towards spiritualities of Ethiopia and indigenous creation stories, forever in search of an enby creator
My vision is a room full of conversations happening at once
And subtitles in both languages
I’m learning how to do woodwork lol and lots of editing + projector stuff… it’s coming together and I’m hoping it turns out as cool as it is in my head! I want to have some more conversations with my aunties too, so far I have talked to my mama and my uncle Mike
November 28 we have a grad show :) so y’all can come see the work at the end! Xoxoxo
