For 50 years, P. Carl lived as a girl and then a queer woman, building a career and a loving marriage while waiting to realize himself in full. When he decides to affirm his gender, his transition puts everything—family, career, friendships—at stake.

I fell hard for Sondheim in this process. For his rigor, his wit, his ache, his refusal to let a moment stay simple. Working on Into the Woods with this brilliant company let me feel just how much mystery and tenderness lives inside the score.
