💚 📸@luksth

Happy #EarthDay 🌎🌏🌍 For this International Mother Earth Day, let’s remind ourselves - more than ever - that we need a shift to a more sustainable lifestyle that works for both people and the planet ♻️ Also, a day to remember environmental progress is built through everyday action—from communities protecting ecosystems to innovators advancing solutions. Clean air, safe water, and climate resilience aren’t optional—they’re essential! And mainly, let’s make Earth Day every day by learning about how nature works, spending time in the outdoors, and getting inspired by any nature backyard you have close by! 💙 Here, a quick sample of the beauty and uniqueness of Nature 🍃, courtesy of Cobalt-winged parakeets and Orange-cheeked parrots 🦜, in Yasuní National Park, at the heart🫀of the Ecuadorian #Amazon: @napowildlifecenter 🌳

Death by a thousand bites 🐜 Lucas Bustamante (@luksth ) encountered this cicada on a night hike in the Amazon rainforest, but so did an army of ants. "This one was still so soft and pale," recalls Lucas. "It moved only its legs, slowly, in a vain effort to escape." Amid the chaos of ants racing over their helpless victim, Lucas composed his shot to tell the dramatic story. Cicadas spend most of their lives underground – up to 17 years for some species. The nymphs emerge under cover of darkness and are vulnerable as they moult one last time to become adults. These lucky ants have arrived at just the right time – the big-headed soldiers working with the smaller workers to disassemble the cicada alive. 📸 'Death by a Thousand Bites' was highly commended in #WPY53's Behaviour: Invertebrates category. Sushi time in the #Amazon! 🤤 I have been fortunate to spend many hours with Giant River Otters 🦦. Despite this, every time I see them, it is like the first time for me 😍! Each of these #mammals mammals can eat up to 3 kilograms of fish per day 😱! That’s why they are significant indicators of the healthy condition of Amazonian water bodies 💦. Habitat destruction and degradation have become their principal threats 🛑, and a further 50% reduction in Giant River #Otter numbers is expected within the next ten years. We need more places like @napowildlifecenter to preserve top predators like these ♻️; besides being unique, they are at the top of the food chain of one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world 🍃.

Happy #WorldFrogDay! 🐸 Frogs are environmental bellwethers, with declines in frog populations often viewed as early warning signs of environmental damage 🛑. Over one-third of species are threatened with extinction, and over 120 are believed to have become extinct ❌since the 1980s. Besides the general threats to biodiversity (habitat destruction/modification 🪵, exploitation, pollution, pesticide use, introduced species, ultraviolet-B radiation, and more), frogs also have a fungus 🍄(Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis or Bd) that causes a disease called Chytridiomycosis. Here are five different frog species I found during a quick night walk through the forests of the Choco Rainforest (@reserva.kapari ), one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. Can you identify them all? I can’t imagine forests without these big-eyed creatures! 👀 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #frogday #frogs #ecuador #details

A unique encounter with an Andean or Spectacled Bear 🐻 in the Ecuadorian 🇪🇨 cloudforests eating its delicatessen: bromelias! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Although the Spectacled Bear is the only bear in South America, it is Endangered primarily by habitat loss from deforestation 🪵 and poaching 🛑. We are so fortunate to have them in the paramos and cloudforets so close to Quito: we must protect their last remaining habitat! ♻️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #Ecuador #quito #bears #mammals @fotografosecuatorianos @ecuadortravel @ilcp_photographers @bellavistacloudforest

Happy World Wildlife Day! 🦎🐙🐬🐝🐸🦅🌎 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is a day to honor all our global biodiversity 🗺️, with its shapes, sizes, and colors 🌈, and to recognize its threats 🛑. Now more than ever, it’s time to enhance our efforts to protect our natural wonders and find a sustainable way to co-exist. 🍃 People everywhere rely on wildlife and biodiversity-based resources to meet our needs - from food, to fuel, medicines, housing, and clothing. For us to enjoy the benefits and beauty that nature brings us and our planet, we have to work together to ensure ecosystems thrive and plant and animal species persist for future generations. I leave you with this young and wild puma entertaining herself with a simple branch. Cats are always cats, regardless of the species or size! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #worldwildlifeday #wildlifeday @ilcp_photographers @fotografosecuatorianos @worldwildlifeday #bigcats #cats #puma
