Finally - after epic levels of procrastination! The last page of @wagonized 20 Page Project, part 2. (with the ghostly, sunlit image peeking through the back of page 39).
I didn’t intend to stop there, but sometimes leaving the construction lines and sketching in is ok. Maybe it was laziness but it seemed like more rendering and finish would not have helped. Charcoal, white pastel, toned paper.
“Do not pet the fluffy cow.” As visitors to Yellowstone somehow still need to be reminded - so I observed during a visit last summer. Another charcoal attempt - messy and rushed but learning. I’ll keep working on it. Based on a fantastic reference and post by @sarahstokesartist
When I first saw this lone Gentoo penguin floating peacefully on an iceberg in the Lemaire Channel, Antarctica, it seemed like he didn’t have a care in the world. However, when I zoomed in to review the photo I noticed a fresh blood stain below his flipper. Then I looked at the earlier, wider shot that revealed that he apparently was stranded after fleeing a leopard seal below. Right about then I bet he was regretting trading in his wings for flippers 60 million years ago. Never can tell
I suppose it’s natural that the sketchbook ends up being a paper trail of recent travels. January was Penguins and Humpbacks in Antarctica, the ‘Horns’ of Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile.
Some quick, small charcoal sketchbook ideas from a while back - nothing finished. Noir film is a good inspiration. First is a frame grab from Chung King Express dir by Wong Kar-wai, second, I’m not sure. Anyone?
