The creation of Dr Kelson. Boy did it take a fair few tests to get the iodine colour, depth, tone and texture just right. In the story his reapplication of iodine was keeping the infected at bay so he needed to look like someone who rarely showered and reapplied iodine on a daily basis. I had found a wonderful B&W photo of an older gentleman online and felt like this image captured something of Kelson in the story his face told so I kept this pinned central to my Kelson mood board. I also tested iodine on a grey wig hoping that this might get past Danny in terms of approval but we decided to keep the silhouette of Kelson clean (bald) to let the iodine/costume/props do the storytelling.
Working with Dave and Alex Stoneman, the wizards from Maekup, we repeatedly tested variations of brown, red and yellow tones, various layering combinations of crusty, gloopy, textured, glaze, gel….the list is goes on.
Then we had to test with indoor and exterior lighting as we were shooting in both, plus don’t forget the dreaded rain so we tested all the waterproof sealers we could find with our Kelson concoctions.
To top it all off we then had to make sure that it didn’t rub off on his costume, areas of rubbing ie hands, armpits and bag strap that he wears over one shoulder BUT it needs to be easy enough to remove at the end of a long shooting day for Ralph so he can go home 🤯.
Big thank you to Ralph for his patience as he had myself and
@lucypmakeup attacking him with sponges on the daily for hours at a time.
Thank you also to
@emmahardieskincare - your Moringa Cleansing Balm is the reason Ralph didn’t go home with an amber hue and
@santamarianovella1221 for being just a glorious mens skincare / perfume brand that I now turn to regularly for our actors.
And a final thank you to the poor guys who had to come and be painted amber for days on end until we got it right ❤️
