In honor of International Women’s Day, one day late, cause that’s how I roll…
The entertainment industry is kind of a dumpster fire of uncertainty right now, AND YET there are so many women out here championing others, lifting people up, leading panels and sharing wisdom and believing truly in the old adage that a rising tide lifts all boats.
1. The amazing
@wendycalhoun , who’s written for shows like “Empire” and “Justified”, directs and show runs with grace, moderates just about every panel you’ll see, and works to advance inclusion at every step (I was lucky enough to speak on a panel she created and moderated this year on Disability Visibility in Film and TV at
@austinfilmfest this year).
2 & 3. Joan Darling, my guiding light (and the same for so many people). The first woman to receive an Emmy nomination for directing tv, she has inspired and encouraged so many directors. If you haven’t watched
@shainafeinberg ’s beautiful short doc on her, “give yourself a gift”, as Joan would say, and check it out.
4.
@maryloubelli , one of the most prolific working tv directors today. Her shows are always a master class in directing, enhancing a story visually, and walking a perfect line between comedy and drama. Her latest Elspeth came out this week (in addition to the incredible series cast, it features the Emmy Award-winning (yay!) and always delightful
@boomboomhiller ) - go watch it! And I don’t know how she does it, but she makes time for EVERYONE.
5.
@latinadirector and
@emmyloudiaz . Pam Carbonero is a producer, director and writer who created the
@ladirectorslab , giving directors, writers and actors a chance to practice, and to play, and creating an amazing, supportive community (not a cult!). And Emmy, a director and tv writer on shows like Jane the Virgin and Station 19, ran the LADL digital series writers room that I was lucky enough to be part of, and is out there chairing committees and teaching classes.
And I don’t have photos, but I see you
@paigemorrowkimball @pippiphooraythe_director (who introduced me to the LADL)
@shazbennett @valerie.weiss.director , and there are so many more!
