NOIR PERFORMANCE posters & stickers campaign Back in the days I would defend this idea very harshly, that the public space isn’t neutral, that architecture is excluding, both limiting and defining the borders between those who get to circulate here and there and those who don’t. Now, when so many of us spend such a great part of our lives in digital spaces, in multiple digital spaces at the same time, communication in the public space becomes “niche”. The digital space has become so extreme, that it’s tempting to find a different kind of neutrality (as if we can call it that) in the public space. It’s tempting to think “it’s for everyone”. But then again, there’s language, there’s rhetoric, it’s very hard to escape the borders we inhabit. @gumgent #borders

NOIR PERFORMANCE is a site-specific text installation commissioned by GUM for the exhibition #borders The idea behind NOIR PERFORMANCE was to look at the logic of late capitalism as the shadow haunting characters in noir crime films. I wanted to look at the Shadow Lands of our economic system, from our exploitative supply chains to the money spent on wars or the breaching of international law; the dark, eerie side of our economy and play with the idea of capitalism performing its own internal monologue in a sort of moral twilight. NOIR PERFORMANCE is a series of city slogans, posters & stickers hijacking the cold vocabulary of corporate marketing and bureaucratic jargon to talk about the curated wreckage we are living in. #tag me if you see one

Tegen de achtergrond van rassenscheiding en een militaire dictatuur raken ze verstrikt in de rafels van een onmogelijk plot — een plot waarin kinderlijke onschuld botst met de vervormde werkelijkheid van een trauma. La sœur et le frère, Luanda et Pablo Casella, se plongent dans un ancien scandale familial, un enchevêtrement d’histoires criminelles fragmentées. Sur fond de ségrégation raciale et de dictature militaire, ils se retrouvent pris dans les fils effilochés d’une intrigue impossible — une intrigue où l’innocence enfantine se heurte à la réalité déformée du traumatisme. Siblings Luanda Casella and Pablo Casella delve into an old family scandal, a web of fragmented criminal stories, only to unravel an impossible plot.
