During Carols by Cabaret, dozens of theatre-makers came together at Hayes Theatre Co to raise money for the Wayside Chapel, as they have for the last 12 years. Carrying close the Wayside’s motto of Love Over Hate, the evening raised over $13,000 and it was all photographed for us, free of charge, as it is every year, by our dear friend Robert Catto. Thank you all who performed, attended, and supported this event this year.
There is something we wanted to add however: while we were in the middle of the first act, 5kms away, a horrific attack on the Jewish community took place. We don’t want to make this attack about us, it isn’t, but we did want to say something. Not only because Anti-Semitic violence must not be ignored but also because Carols by Cabaret was put together by theatre-makers, and watched by audience members, of many faiths, ethnicities, and backgrounds, and some of these people are Jewish. While words might not be much, it felt like hiding away to not say something.
It may be only words but we hope it might provide even a small amount of comfort to our Jewish friends and colleagues to say that our thoughts are with the Jewish community following the attack at Bondi Beach. We hope to embody the motto of Love Over Hate that was at the forefront of Carols by Cabaret last Sunday and encourage all to hold the Jewish members of our community, both personal and theatrical, close this festive season. We hope that we never see this kind of violence again, but it will take more than hope to get there.
