Following a six-month search, we recently held a three-day finalist workshop for our Young Artist Program!
Seventeen emerging artists were given a crash course in language, acting, dance, stage combat and health before delivering their final performances to an Opera Australia panel.
We're pleased to now introduce the Opera Australia Young Artists for 2026/27!
See them on stage along with our graduating Young Artists from 2025/26 in Opera Australia's Young Artists in Concert at Sydney Opera House on Sunday August 2.

New Australian operas are rare, and The Drover's Wife is especially significant for the way it blends two ancient storytelling traditions.
Originally a short story by Henry Lawson, the opera marks the latest evolution of Leah Purcell’s Legend of Molly Johnson, her feminist and First Nations reimagining of Lawson’s tale.
Purcell collaborated with former judge-turned-composer George Palmer, who was gripped by the story after stumbling upon Purcell’s novel on his wife’s bedside table.
For years, Purcell has been the face and voice of Molly Johnson: performing the role on stage and on film, and narrating the audiobook of her novel. Now she passes the role to her relative, Nina Korbe, a rising force in Australian opera and a familiar voice to ABC Classic listeners.
“[The opera] is Australian history, black and white,” Purcell says ahead of the premiere at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s new Glasshouse Theatre on May 13.
