Yesterday morning, Wendy Rogers, FAIA stood at #AIA25 to receive the 2025 AIA Architecture Firm Award on behalf of the more than 100 LPAers who traveled to Boston for the moment, and hundreds more in Austin, Dallas, Irvine, Sacramento, San Antonio, San Diego and San Jose. “Eliminating carbon must unite us and align our disciplines in a common cause.” she told the convention center crowd. “The task is too big to tackle alone.” #changinglivesbydesign #everythingcounts #theresalwaysaway #wedontdothisalone @aianational

“No Excuses: Integrated Design for a Sustainable Future” is out now! This new book from LPA Design Studios, published by @oro_editions , offers a ‘road map’ for eliminating carbon and elevating the human experience in the built environment. The book is a call to action, providing compelling evidence that the industry will need to work differently and think differently to achieve its goals. Purchase at the link in bio 📕

Now open, Thomas G. Harris Elementary School stands as a powerful example of how thoughtful design can support student wellbeing and strengthen community! 🎉🎉🎉 Designed to serve a diverse population, the school creates healthy, equitable learning environments that foster belonging for every student. From the very beginning, the project was shaped through collaboration. @austinisd brought together a team of teachers, parents and community members to define a shared vision for the future of the school. The result is a campus deeply rooted in the aspirations of its community. Harris Elementary reflects what is possible when public education and collaborative design come together with purpose — creating spaces that nurture connection, inspire learning and lay the foundation for a stronger future for generations of students. 🎒🚌🍎 Thanks to our partners @joerisgc .

After risking their lives responding to emergencies, firefighters deserve a dedicated hub that prioritizes their health and safety. 🧑‍🚒 Fire Station 178 in @rancho_cucamonga_fire_district presented an opportunity to rethink not only operating costs, noise pollution and carbon footprint but new ways to support firefighters’ health and wellness. The station’s all-electric fire engine — only the third operating in North America — protects engineers from diesel exhaust fumes while reducing carbon emissions. 🚒🚒🚒 Resilience was another priority. LPA’s integrated team focused on an efficient building with systems designed to provide continuous operation through power outages, natural disasters and other emergencies. “I’m a housing guy. That’s why I do this job. I pick up the garbage once a week in exchange for the opportunity to work on housing policy.” We talked to @mayortoddgloria of @cityofsandiego about affordable housing, sustainability, art and beauty in ‘America’s finest city’ — a place poised for exciting change under his leadership. West Hollywood has long been a place of advocacy and pride. The AIDS Monument continues this legacy by honoring those lost, those who survived, and the organizations that formed as a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Fields of cast metal pillars combined with landscape, soundscape and light tell stories through a sequence of spaces. The arrival plaza invites visitors to the memorial. The first field of pillars are arranged at random, allowing visitors to move freely and discover accounts from the past. The second field is denser, meant to invoke difficulty and loss. At the end, the respite grove offers a space for peace and gathering. The monument lies in a central part of West Hollywood — adjacent to the LPA-designed recreation center — ensuring that these stories are visible and integral to the community. @theaidsmonument @wehorec @wehocity @oneinstitutela @nationalasla #WLAM #WorldLandscapeArchitectureMonth

The Frances Grice Cardinal Child Development Center has some unconventional (unofficial) mascots — striking cedar trees just outside its main office. 🌲🌲 The site chosen for the school was unusually verdant for its location in central San Bernardino, including an array of mature pine, cedar and eucalyptus trees. With the goal of saving as many trees as possible, LPA’s integrated design team proposed making them a major component of the learning experience. We’re proud to share that Thomas G. Harris Elementary School for @austinisd has been awarded our first ever TxA Design Award! Located in historically overlooked East Austin, Harris Elementary School is home to a largely economically disadvantaged student population with three out of four students identified as “at-risk” of dropping out. The new design addresses this by creating healthy, equitable learning environments that prioritize student wellbeing, security and stability. The campus is organized into neighborhoods, establishing smaller communities within the larger school. Nooks, small-group spaces and collaborative areas offer multiple scales for learning. Each neighborhood has direct access to outdoor learning spaces, including a plaza paved with 10,000 salvaged bricks. Thanks to our partners @joerisgc , and to @txarchitects for this important recognition.

Happy Earth Day from LPA! 🌎

We’re pleased to share that, for the first time in LPA history, we have crossed the 80% threshold for predicted energy use intensity (pEUI) with an 80.7% reduction. In addition, 100% of our projects in 2025 were energy modeled.   Key trends that contributed to this year’s improvement:
📈 More projects hitting the 80% reduction threshold
📈 More projects incorporating on-site renewable energy
📈 More projects achieving net zero energy   As we work toward the AIA 2030 Commitment to net zero, LPA remains focused on making sustainability and building performance the foundation of every design, regardless of size, scale or budget.

This World Landscape Architecture Month, we’re highlighting the new courtyard at Sunnyvale Middle School in Sunnyvale, Calif. 🌞 This courtyard is a transformative hub designed to foster a vibrant and inclusive educational environment. A focal point of the campus, the space enhances connectivity with circulation paths linking outdoor learning and gathering areas. Drought-tolerant planting and integrated bioretention areas improve ecological performance while reducing water use. Lush greenery creates an inviting and health-focused atmosphere for students and staff. By creating a welcoming, functional center within the school grounds, this new courtyard has become a dynamic catalyst for academic, social and environmental enrichment at Sunnyvale. #WorldLandscapeArchitectureMonth #WLAM2026 #LandscapeArchitecture @nationalasla @sunnyvaleschooldistrict
