Reflections from SXSW.
After a week immersed in the XR programme at SXSW, a few things have stayed with us.
Across multiple works - from intimate, archive-led storytelling to playful, confrontational and deeply personal experiences - there was a clear thread. High technology being used not as spectacle, but as a way to explore something fundamentally human.
Highlights including ‘Lost Love Hotline’ stood out for their emotional depth - drawing audiences into shared experiences of heartbreak through voice, memory and interaction. Others, like ‘Lesbian Simulator’, approached identity with humour, sharpness and clarity, creating space for both joy and critique. We enjoyed some great work from both ‘Cycle’ and ‘Lovebirds’ - clever and engaging.
What resonated most was not the technology itself, but the intention behind it.
Across the programme, artists are asking similar questions:
How do we reconnect?
How do we process experience?
What does it mean to be human in increasingly mediated environments?
There is a clear shift - away from novelty, and towards meaning.
Unwired Dance Theatre is proud to be part of this wider conversation, presenting loss·y within a programme that continues to push the boundaries of immersive, embodied work.
More to come.
