As protest and protection. A combined effort to make hardness soft.
.
.
A scapular is a traditional devotional pendant worn over the shoulders to protect the wearer from harm and remind them of a vow. While a vow is a performative speech act that can make something happen, its etymology suggests other meanings—longing, desire, and the things we bear. “Lead Scapular” is made from an apothecary of materials, combined as one would a spell or remedy— with a seed of animacy; words spoken to coax materials, unseen entities, and bring something into being. The dark palette that binds this work is a space of in-betweenness—a realm that contains both undoing and generativity. While alchemists once endeavored to turn lead into gold, this work asks us to stay with the lead.

US-NORWAY FULBRIGHT FOUNDATION: I was honored to be amongst an amazing group of fellow Fulbright Scholars – scientists, historians, educators, students, and Roving Scholars - at the University of Oslo, where we each gave a short presentation on our projects. So grateful to the Norwegian government for its firm stance on academic freedom.

This week at Edge Space: JEWELS FOR THE UNDERWORLD — a solo exhibition by @loritalcott presented in conjunction with @nycjewelryweek
We’re excited to host Lori Talcott (@loritalcott ), a Seattle-based artist who uses the format of jewelry to explore contemporary theories of magic, the agency of objects, and the intersection of language and matter. Born into a family of jewelers and watchmakers, she apprenticed with a master silversmith in Norway, specializing in traditional folk jewelry, before earning her MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Talcott’s work is held in collections worldwide, including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
