Many months ago, right after our giant Easter bake, in fact, we were visited by a couple of folks from the BBC who were making a documentary about British food. @maxgrowingsolo and Tessa came and sampled our bread, pies, bacon hot cross buns and a few other treats, and we had a good old natter about why local food and UK-grown produce are so important to us. We were maybe a bit over-tired and over-caffeinated than weâd have liked, but I think we talked some sense. Anyway you can decide for yourselves this week, as the series is airing every lunchtime at 1.45pm. You can listen at the link in bio. We think our episode is on Tuesday but itâs worth checking out the whole thing to hear Ollie from Cann Mill and Kate from @woodadventfarm discussing their part in this small food ecosystem of ours.
Maybe have a listen and then reserve your bread for Friday while youâre at it.
Late to the party as ever, but delighted to be included in @goodfoodguideuk âs top 50 UK Bakeries again this year alongside lots of pals and heroes, and proud to see so many @swgrainnetwork comrades represented in the list. đŞ Thanks to @fieldbakery , @gothelneyfarmer , Stoates and @gilchesters for keeping us supplied with the finest flours since 2022, and to @frankovskateryna for keeping the buns in mint condition these past few months-your shaping skills are second to none. đ
Stoneground flour is more flavourful, nutritious and less wasteful đ
One bakery weâd love to share with you is @longstrawbakery . They work with stone-milled wheat, oats and rye, sourced from smaller-scale farmers and millers here in the UK, often via their regional grain network @swgrainnetwork . Theyâve developed an amazing bun dough recipe, which uses a technique that enables a soft, light dough, even when using stoneground flour - swipe through for the ingredients and method!
Ever heard of a tangzhoug?
âThe tangzhong is non-negotiable. This Chinese method of incorporating pre-gelatinized flour into the bun dough guarantees that your bun dough will be softer, lighter and more supple regardless of what flour you use. You can even incorporate some wholemeal flour if youâre after a bun with a deeper wheat flavour.â

Scrumptious bakes right in Wiveliscombe (West Somerset) . We absolutely loved their pizza Romanos. Also got the cardamom bun and a pear frangipane tart, both outstanding. Cannot wait to try again!

Just a little window into our first 10 Mile Feast, and what a start it was.
Captured by @with_the_wild_cic , this reel brings back the warmth, the flavours, and the joy of gathering with purpose. Everything on the table came from within ten local miles, grown, raised, baked, or foraged with care.
More feasts are on the way. Which plate would you reach for first?
Tag someone youâd love to bring to the next one.
With gratitude to our brilliant fellow hosts @thesomersetfoodtrail and @longstrawbakery and With the Wild CIC couldnât have done it without you.

Well, that's us done and dusted for another summer season!
As ever, thank you to our growing network of customers for turning up week after week, for bringing us your surplus summer fruit harvests, for keeping us chirpy during multiple heatwaves, and for making it possible for us to keep working with such amazing suppliers and local grains within the @swgrainnetwork .
We'll be back, bright eyed and bushy tailed on Friday September 5th, when you can expect our menu to begin it's annual pivot towards orchard fruit, warming spices and perhaps even the much beloved brown butter oatmeal raisin cookies...
...until then - we hope you don't miss us too much!
Big love
James and Freddie
Roll up roll up, weâre doing a thing for this yearâs @thesomersetfoodtrail . Not just a thing, but a 30-mile feast! What does that mean? Thanks for asking. Here are some details:
Join us for a collaborative feast prepared by three local businesses with shared values and a passion for supporting each othersâ ventures. All of our small enterprises focus on putting south-west grown ingredients at the heart of our menus, and all of the meat, grain and vegetables served at our thirty-mile feast will either have been grown and reared by us, or sourced from suppliers in the surrounding area â chickens from @streamfarm , flour from @fieldbakery and Stoates, vegetables and pickles straight from @landwich.uk âs own farm in Greenham, lemon verbena and elderflower from our back gardens.
Weâll be hosted by the soon-to-open Meadow (formerly Podshavers) as they soft launch their new community-focused cafĂŠ.
Friday July 18th, 7pm. ÂŁ50 per head. Donât be late.
Tickets available from the link in bio. Menu in image number 2. âď¸
Everyone needs a great chocolate chip cookie recipe that they can come back to time and time again, and we think this is just that.
Featured in our list of best bakeries published last month, Longstraw bakery wanted wholegrains to be a staple in all their bakery products, and started by adding them to their chocolate chip cookie.
The full recipe is on our website, and you can get weekly recipes sent to your inbox if you sign up to our free newsletter.

@longstrawbakery 's focus on provenance means much of their flour comes from local famers through the @swgrainnetwork which has contributed to turning out flavourful (and nutritious) bakes since 2022. At the link in bio they share their recipe for a deliciously indulgent double chocolate chip wholemeal cookie. Tag us if you have a go at making them.

Chuffed to bits to be among @goodfoodguideuk âs 50 best British bakeries. Lots of old friends and heroes on the list and weâre honoured to be alongside them, particularly fellow @swgrainnetwork members repping the local wheats. đž âď¸
