500m erg test ⛓️
If you saw my last post, you would know I’m not able to row for the next couple of months.. good thing I still have some old erging content 🤳
I did this 500m test 2 weeks before breaking the old 1k world record. This was my first “formal”500m test in many years so I didn’t have much of a target or goal other than seeing what I was capable of
Based on the 250m test I did a week or so before this, I figured I would be in the range of 1:14-1:15. So my pacing plan was to sit at 1:14 after a start and hold on
On the day the warm up felt a little heavy and sluggish compared to my other sprint sessions. As a result, I thought maybe holding 1:15 was a smarter choice
I got halfway through and it wasn’t feeling as hard as I expected so I was able to push on and actually go faster in second half (probably not the best way to pace a 500m)
Reflecting on that now, it’s another good lesson (one I keep learning) to not always listen to your body in the warm up (don’t ignore massive warning signs though). Those feelings of being sluggish and slow weren’t real, I should have ignored them and stuck with my plan
I think if I committed to more of an aggressive pacing strategy I could have gone .5-.8 seconds faster. But hey who cares unless you do it right? Lesson learnt
Also random data, I went about 5 splits slower over 500m compared to 250m, and then 5 splits slower over 1k compared to 500m. This 500m was actually the reason why I thought a 1:19 1k was possible for me, it was fun putting that theory to the test!
Bit of a long overdue health update from me!
Since Janurary last year I’ve been dealing with an abscess (in an unfortunate spot for a rower). I’ve had four different operations to fix the issue and I’m slowing making progress towards being fully healthy
In between each surgery there have been periods of no pain and with that I have been able to row and race in regattas. However, after my most recent surgery (four weeks ago), I won’t be able to row until my next operation (hopefully in 2 months time)
The last 14 months have been a rollercoaster and overall, I’m extremely grateful for the support I’ve had physically and emotionally. Although I’m definitely disappointed about having this health issue, I’m still very grateful for being in good health overall
The athlete in me has certainly been struggling with these training and competing interruptions. It is no secret that I am passionate about pushing my limits and seeing how fast I can be, this health issue is teaching me how to deal with training less or not at all
What it also has taught me is how to improve in a non traditional rowing sense. Finding ways to adapt the training and make the best of a bad situation. I’ve spent time on ski ergs, stair maters, surfing and building upper body strength. All of these have helped me getting better in one way or another
While this health issue could be all healed in a few months, there certainly isn’t guarantee on that and that’s okay. I’ll be back one day and that thought makes be very excited!
WORLD RECORD 🎥🚨
Logan Ullrich chats with us after breaking the 1,000m Concept2 RowErg world record, stopping the clock at an incredible 2:38.1 - just 0.1 seconds faster than the previous mark set by Great Britain’s Phil Clapp 🤯

Respect to Phil Clapp for setting the standard - and massive congratulations to Logan on an epic performance 👏🔥
(Previous) 1km rowerg WORLD RECORD 🌏 full video
Feels pretty surreal to be able to caption my post like that!
Here is the raw clip of the whole test and a couple of details:
Date: 16/02/26
Height: 189cm
Weight: 102kgs
Age: 25
13 years ago when I started rowing they had us doing a 1k erg test on one of the first days to rank us all. I was so nervous and the only part I liked about the experience was when it was over (think I went around 4:15-4:25). That sense of relief after an erg test is something I still experience now, but overall I love the whole process
The main part of the process I love is the pursuit of pushing myself to be better than I ever have before. The satisfaction of reaching a new personal best time is addictive. I’ve always dreamed that one day, by going for a new personal best, I would in turn be going for a world record as well. Having this incredible score and target to reach for has taken my past my perceived limits and self doubts, and for that I am very grateful
@bigphil90 set the standard in this event, and it was special to even have a go at improving his time. The rowing community is so supportive and keen to help each other be the best they can be, it’s been a real honour to speak with so many legends of the sport in preparation for this effort. Without their help I wouldn’t have ever thought this was possible. Also, a huge thank you to eveyone that supported me on the day, your energy helped so much
I’m looking forward to the day my time gets beaten as it’s awesome seeing so many rowers push their limits and set new benchmarks. Hopefully I’ll be in the position to challenge for the record again when that time comes!
All time 1km erg world record!
Dreamed for so long of having the fastest time in world for any distance. Very happy!
Full video and more to come out soon
Briefly considered a code switch to rowing 🚣
.. that feeling quickly passed 🤣
Shout out to the incredible crew at @rowingnz for putting us through our paces.
After the 100m sprint last week, thought I would give the 250m a go
Pretty happy with how I paced this one as I faded just in the last 30-50 meters. It’s such a different feeling going out as hard as I can on an erg test and holding on as opposed to the pacing of a 2k or longer pieces
Although comparison can sometimes be the thief of joy, I love looking at my times in the context of the world’s best. @bigphil90 can rip this pace for 500m (world record). Sustaining that pace for another 35 seconds is epic
Finally had a go at a 500 time myself this week, will post it soon!
100m erg test for my 100th post ⛓️
Following on from my video last week, I’ve been trying to increase my max power and output recently. A great way to test this has been the 100m test
This time last year my pb was 14.3 seconds. I was strong at the time but didn’t have the ability to apply to the erg
@loicschalbetter has been an awesome help giving me some tips on how to get better at the 100. It’s so insane how fast he is on the erg, huge respect! I am a full second off his world record and over 100m, that’s a ridiculous gap
Looking forward to utilising this power on the water in the future!
Lately I’ve been working a lot on building my strength and power off the water
Over my time rowing, being stronger has had a significant positive impact to my overall boat speed and in particular my sprinting ability
Here are a few clips from my recent weights sessions:
Bench: 120kg x1
Squat: 165kg x4
Erg: 100m
Muscle ups: 2.5 🥲
Deadlift: 140kg working on speed
Erg: catch position push I guess you can call it
Deadlift: 180kg x3
Chin ups: +40kgs x2 (excuse the facial expressions)
Bench: 113 x3 (tough last rep 😅)
My current rowing volume has been a lot lower than normal thanks to an on going injury. This in turn has made it easier to lift heavier weights due to less fatigue. The challenge now will be to hold on to this strength and power while rowing more
18 year old 1k erg test ⛓️
When I was 18 I tried to compete for quite a few different age group world records. The 1k test was one I thought I would have a go at beating.
The record at the time for 17-18 year olds was around 2:44, and now it’s at an insane 2:41.1. My score of 2:47.7 was a good bit off the record but I’m still really happy I tried. I knew going into it that there was a slim chance I would succeed, but that was no reason to not give it a go.
Looking back, and using the experience I have now, I would have done some different training methods before the test. I was fit at the time, but was lacking specific high intensity intervals targeting the anaerobic energy system.
This is still my 1k pb to this day, as I haven’t tried to go faster since. One day I would love to put some work in and try to compete for the overall 1k record!
