Fifty years on from Montreal, the rivalries, stories and memories are still very much alive. At Lake Karapiro, New Zealand’s 1976 Olympic rowing squad reunited for the first time since the Games - sharing tales of fierce club battles, Olympic campaigns, lifelong friendships and the crews that helped shape an era of New Zealand rowing. The reunion has since taken on even deeper meaning following the recent passing of Grant McAuley, one of the great oarsmen of his generation and a respected member of the 1976 squad. From Avon and Petone to Waikato and Whakatane, this is a story about competition, camaraderie, loss and the enduring bond created through rowing. Read the full story on rowingnz.kiwi

Honoured to back New Zealand’s best - from Maadi and NZ Champs all the way to the world stage. Proud to continue as @RowingNZ ’s Official Apparel Partner through LA 2028 - supporting elite athletes, coaches, officials, and the volunteers who make this sport run. For Picton Rowing Club, success is measured not just by medals, but by keeping people connected to rowing for life. And for many former rowers, that journey may simply begin with getting back in the boat. Read more at rowingnz.kiwi/all-stories

If further evidence were needed of the health of school rowing in Aotearoa New Zealand, a total of nine new schools made their debut appearance at the 2026 Maadi Regatta. Rowing New Zealand was thrilled to welcome members of the 1976 Olympic Rowing Team for a special 50-year reunion at our building today. It was a chance to celebrate their incredible journey, including the bronze medal-winning performance by the eight at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. These athletes, like so many before and after them, truly embody the spirit of how rowing shapes Great New Zealanders. The 1976 New Zealand eight was made up of Ivan Sutherland, Trevor Coker, Peter Dignan, Lindsay Wilson, Athol Earl, Dave Rodger, Alec McLean, Tony Hurt, and cox Simon Dickie. This remarkable team included five multi-medal Olympians - Coker, Wilson, Earl, Hurt, and Dickie - who had also claimed gold at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Joining the celebration were legends from the men’s coxed four - Viv Haar, Danny Keane, Tim Logan, Ian Boserio, and cox David Simmons -and the men’s coxless four - Bob Murphy, Grant McAuley, Des Lock, and David Lindstrom. The visit included a barge trip where the group watched the current World Cup team racing at Winter Series. Their legacy inspires us all and reminds us of the proud history that continues to fuel New Zealand rowing today.
