[Fonts in Use] "The City of Whispers, house of Thieves," a collection of 13 short stories themed around thieves by Professor Chris Ro, has been published. 📓 Ro celebrate the release of the new book, an exhibition and book talk were held at XXPRESS in Youngsan-gu, Seoul. Arvana was used beautifully throughout both the book and the exhibition - from the title to the body text and even the display in the exhibition space. We're always grateful to Chris for supporting lo-ol Type. [Fonts in Use] The identity work for Faces books (@faces.books ), a small publishing house and independent bookstore, features Banya & Banya Mist! They were used beautifully across a wide range of materials, from the logo to posters and zines. Designer Dokho Shin(@shindokho ) made truly excellent use of Banya & Banya Mist. Personally, I think this is a brilliant example of Banya Mist being perfectly applied to the identity, while Banya works wonderfully for body text. [Fonts in Use] The Korean edition of “How to Disrupt Social Scripts” by Samia Hesni uses the Banya & Banya Mist. Banya is used for the body text, while Banya Mist is beautifully applied to the book title. [Fonts in Use] Arvana was used on the blog of the graphic design studio ”Scenery of today“ (@sceneryoftoday )! 🥹 I’m so happy that a design studio I personally admire and support used Arvana well. I was so excited and quickly asked for some images of the font in use, but I’m too lazy to post it right away (...). [New] It‘s been a while since we have released a new library typeface. But we finally getting around to release new one! 😎 Banya(반야) is a Hangeul serif typeface that blends traditional brush strokes with woodblock carving. This typeface was inspired by Buddhist scriptures, which is presumed to have been published as a woodblock print in the early 20th century. Overall, it exudes a sharp and solid feel from being carved into wood, while simultaneously conveying the delicate and unique shapes of brush strokes. For example, the shape of the letters “ieung(ㅇ)” and “yu(ㅠ)” emphasize the feeling of being written with a brush, whereas the letters “digeut(ㄷ)” and “mieum(ㅁ)” incorporate a slight stencil-like effect to highlight the carved form. Banya comes in versions ranging from Light to Bold for body text, with a Black version designed for titles. As the weight increases, the distinguishing features become more pronounced and expanded, making the details more noticeable. Banya Mist(반야 미스트) is a stencil-style display font that retains the core structure of the original Banya while partially fading or dissolving certain elements. If “Banya” represents a state of transcendental wisdom attained through enlightenment, then reaching such a state might feel like grasping at something invisible—like mist. While Banya draws inspiration from the letterforms found in traditional woodblock-printed Buddhist scriptures, Banya Mist captures the feeling of truth obscured by a veil of fog. Banya and Banya Mist work best as a pair, amplifying each other’s impact when used together.
