@lionsbread.ct opening weekend 🚀🍞 When thoughtful branding, quality product, cool humans and good energy come together it’s a recipe for success. ___ About Lion’s Bread Lion’s Bread is a no nonsense sourdough bakery, founded in the Bo-Kaap in 2024 by Jack Green who is driven to create a uniquely South African bakery. We make seriously good bread with no additives – only flour, water and salt. By increasing the diversity of grains in all of our breads and leavening them with wild fermentation they are far more digestible, nutritious, and delicious than the average loaf. We also make a thoughtfully curated selection of pastries. We rely on modern and traditional European and American baking techniques, however, you will notice, some subtle and some bold shifts in flavour from the usual Euro-centric bakery fare as we attempt to showcase the incredible ingredients South Africa has to offer. 📷 @daleherbst

Come and join us at the long table for our third Supper Club edition 😊 - Hosted at Lion’s Bread beautiful bakery on the 23rd of May - expect warming seasonal dishes, fresh bread and some good wine/homemade kombucha ❤️ - This time of year is feeling cold and cosy in Cape Town, and I at least find myself staying in a lot more. So here is a good excuse to get out and meet some new friends or bring your old ones along. - Make sure to book your spot! Big love Emma

In a city where food trends rise and fall with the seasons, Lion’s Bread is trying to grow into something more enduring: a bakery rooted in care, craft, and community. Founded by Jack Green and @miarose_penn , Lion’s Bread began not as a concept chasing novelty, but as a response to a simple, fundamental question - what would bread look like if it were made properly, with people and place at its centre? The bakery started small, operating out of a garage in the Bo-Kaap, where the rhythms of daily life, neighbourly exchange, and shared history still shape the streets. From the outset, the approach was deliberately pared back. Flour, water and salt. Wild fermentation. Time. No additives, no shortcuts. Just bread made slowly, with a diversity of grains sourced from great South African farmers and millers who share the bakery’s values. Today there are three locations, each with its own personality - the bakery hub in Gardens, the original little Rose street cafe in the Bo-Kaap, and a cafe at @thecornerstoreonbree on Bree street. Here’s a little insight into the craft of baking our sourdough loaves. Filmed by @oscar.b.g

On the menu til the end of May🍂

Bought a Milk Tart Bun from @lionsbread.ct , The Corner Store (164 Bree Street) and brought it into studio for a little shoot. How cute? 😍 I set up a flash and pushed a warm light onto the pastry to draw out the cinnamon tones and textures – letting every layer come alive on camera. Lion’s Bread already makes one of the best cardamom buns in Cape Town, but the Milk Tart Bun deserves its own moment. Add it to your list. It’s exceptional 👌 📷 @daleherbst

Our first few weeks in our new Bree street space 🌞 - we’re learning lots, fine tuning, having fun, and feeling very grateful to share this space with you! Our original cafe on Rose street is still going strong, and retains its own unique character - @jonasty.filmscore is serving up pastry, coffee, fresh loaves, and toasties are still there for you to enjoy. Bree street is something different, with a little kitchen that @bluehorsecooking is serving daily plates out of. We’re using local, seasonal produce of course! We’re excited for you to try our brekkies, focaccia sandwiches, and simple plates. Our pastry cabinet is, as always, ever-changing with seasons and as we continue to experiment. Shared with gorgeous African brands @thejoinerysa @siafuhome @houseandleisure @dearrae curated by @tammytinker 🚀 this new space has many exciting projects cooking, so watch out for more soon. For now, come visit us: Mon-Fri 9-16.00 Sat 10-14.00

Each space will have its own quirks and menu. Our staple breads and pastries will be available in every store. At Rose Street find our classic toasties and fresh sandwiches or simply bread and butter 🤤 On Bree Street at @thecornerstoreonbree , a simple breakfast and lunch menu served from 0900-1700. Sit on our beautiful terrace or in @houseandleisure ‘s reading room. And at Clare Street Street, our central bakery, come and watch how we work and have a chat with the baker.

Our new bakery is taking shape! We will have our soft opening tomorrow 10/12/25 and invite you in to catch a moment of our making process. Our offering will be limited at first but will grow organically as more feet pass through our doors and as we settle into this new space. Looking forward to having you here!

Seeing my images printed in a magazine for the very first time feels incredibly special ✨ I’ve photographed @lionsbread.ct before using natural light, but when Jack and Mia called to say that @houseandleisure wanted to feature them, I instantly knew I wanted to shift the visual direction. Harder light felt right — to bring out the surfaces, the colour of the bread, the texture, and all the small details that deserve to be seen. So proud of you, @lionsbread.ct , and thank you for trusting me with this moment 🤍 📷 @daleherbst for @lionsbread.ct & @houseandleisure House & Leisure – Volume 19 (Holiday) is now available at major retailers nationwide and select independent stores.

This is the @lionsbread.ct chocolate orange cake I’m always talking about — easily in my top 3 favourite eats in Cape Town 😮‍💨🤌😍 Made with @honestchocolate and @ozcfarm oranges — a moist chocolate sponge, not-too-sweet chocolate German buttercream and dark chocolate orange ganache, finished with EVOO, sea salt and zest. Available from time to time at @lionsbread.ct 🍊🍫 📷 @daleherbst
