Oftentimes, creatives in any industry are popularly referred to ‘dreamers’ , ‘unserious’ and often viewed as ‘eccentric outsiders’ until the results of our ‘ outlandish ‘ ideas begin to take shape. Words like ‘weird ‘ , ‘odd’ , or ‘crazy’ also cannot be excluded from our descriptive vocabulary. This is a burden most creative people bear silently as they work on solutions to problems they see clearly in their minds , problems the society would yet perceive in years or decades to come. The typical creative is a challenger of traditions, an independent thinker, a risk taker , a force to be reckoned with and time without number, underestimated. It is therefore with immense gratitude that I spotlight @aidawards , a global voice honoring African design, the first international program celebrating creativity and forward thinking designs across the African continent for recognizing and honoring my 24 months project ‘THE STONE THE BUILDERS REJECTED’ a project that shows how fashion waste can be creatively used to create Haute couture dresses. This project was created in spite of personal health challenges, COVID 19, various uncertainties, existentialist questions and eventual spiritual rebirth. Needless to say, this is an honor I do not take lightly . I would like to thank @roberta.annan for her relentless effort towards the globalization of African fashion and design, a cause she’s being pushing for at least a decade, carrying this ‘calling’ on her head like ‘Agege bread’ like we say in Nigeria. To my fellow winners in other categories (Architectural design, Product design, Communication design, Spatial design and of course Fashion design), I say a big congratulations and Godspeed as we link arms to create a functional and unrecognizable Africa. 💛 JUPITER.

Some decades ago while in secondary school , I was a member of the Girl Guides Association. Every Wednesday, we were mandated to wear our Robin blue dresses with matching belts, berets and butter colored boots. I had never been more proud as a student. One weekend we were invited to go camping, I begged my mom to find a way . You see we had to pay a sum of 5,000 Nigerian naira and I was desperate! Eventually she caved and coughed out the money from her then already tight teachers salary. Off we went packed in a white Hiace bus like sardines. By dusk we arrived at our destination, it was an old bungalow and we would be staying over night. Tasks were shared and the camp fire was started. We sang songs , clapped laughed and danced . By 23:00 our Chaperon ‘Mrs Nzewi’ sent us off to bed informing us that we’d be leaving for our school by 7:00am, but before then, she made us put out the campfire and sweep the entire place clean. If I hadn’t participated in building the campfire, i would’ve sworn there had never been a fire. As I swept I could hear her voice trailing behind me……’Always leave a place better than you found it’. 6:00am came and the deafening sound of her alarm woke us up. All 17 of us hurriedly put on our clothes and made a beeline for the bus piling ourselves into the bus. Unlike en route to the campsite, our departure was rather sullen we didn’t want to leave so soon. There I was lost in thought looking distractedly at the cars passing by repeating in my mind ….leave a place better than you found it…leave a place better than you found it. Unbeknownst to me, this would be my mantra in the coming years. Decades later i found myself passionate about sustainable fashion and very clear on my mission to leave this earth better than I found it. Even if not for yourself, do it for the future generations. #sustainable #responsiblefashion #climatechangeisreal #circulareconomy♻️ ecoconciousfashion . @lhaudeafrica @laudeafrica thank you for encouraging to document my progress.
