“jack johnson”
a couple years back i was in the smithsonian in dc and saw a portrait of jack johnson that resonated with me. bright smile. stern posture. it felt forbidden…
a kind of confidence that wasn’t allowed in the era he lived in.
i feel like that energy is needed. so making this record felt like a duty more than a “single”.
slow. intentional.
blackness is not “simple” and the black experience is not a monolithic one. black stories have to be told the right way.

when @mogulmarz sent the beat i immediately thought “big boy” rap. it felt like a continuation of me and p’s song “boyz ii men”… except now we’re really the men we used to talk about becoming.
we both had a lot going on at the time, so for our verses to mirror each other without even speaking on it felt… cathartic. like a real out of body experience.
moments like this remind me to slow down and let life happen how it’s supposed to. pressure burst pipes or makes diamonds… in our case it gave us this record.
