One year old today! The third edition of Rock Climbing was born in August 2022. In celebration, here are the 6 Part page photos (+ the illustration by @gillymcarthur because I love it 🌸) Folk often ask how different it is. So here goes … * it’s bigger! an increased word count but importantly more diagrams (everyone says this really helps) * a new spacious layout * all new photos (from many sources/venues/photographers to add variety and inspiration) * expanded indoor chapter thats appears earlier in the book to reflect today’s climbing journey * more about women in the history section (can’t believe it took me so long to address this ☺️) * fully updated technical advice (thanks to the huge list of coaches, instructors, guides and specialists who helped with this 🙏) * lots of snippets and suggestions to make your climbing safer and more fun! As with the previous editions - this book is a massive @mtntraining collaboration. It draws together ideas about skills and techniques from a great many mega-experienced people. It’s not simply what I think! The focus is on sound principles and safe behaviours rather than rules or trendy techniques. White Gold A winter storm blew in. Just in time for a prearranged day to hit the jackpot. And so we immersed ourselves briefly in glittering Welsh white gold. A one-axe adventure, the first ever for Issy, and not another soul in sight. How lucky we felt, an privileged too. Precious moments to cling to through the snowless days ahead 😊 Thanks to @rab.equipment.uk for throwing us together Great job on her new boots and crampons @v12_outdoor And to @dmm_wales for the harness and Spire Tech axe👌

Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust (JCMT) “Where one Falls, may many Rise. In the winter of 1979, Jonathan fell from the north face of the Matterhorn. He was 27 years old. Jonathan’s boundless enthusiasm for the outdoors led to a love of climbing that provided constant challenge, growth, and excitement. But a lack of experience and training meant that his life was tragically cut short. Today we work to honour his legacy, by equipping young climbers (aged 18-30) with the skills and understanding they need to explore the mountains safely.” Some of this equipping takes place here in the mountains of Eryri. Over two sun-baked days this quartet of inquisitive trad seconders experienced: ⭐️ First trad leads (slides 1 & 2) ⭐️ First alpine coils (slides 3 & 4) ⭐️ Frst Italian hitches (slides 5 & 6) ⭐️ Insect-greedy butterworts and bobbing cotton grass (slides 7 & 8) ⭐️ Plus hours of learning, exploring and drinking it all in.
