𝒐𝒘𝒍_𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒍𝒚_𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓_𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕_𝒃𝒊𝒓𝒅 steel, polyurethane, scrap foam, grout 6’5” 2023 ✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼ 𝒐𝒘𝒍_𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒍𝒚_𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓_𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕_𝒃𝒊𝒓𝒅 is a decorative motif found on a witch's pot from the Pre-Columbian Milagro-Quevedo culture of coastal Ecuador. I became familiar with this artefact while 3D scanning in the archeology reserves of the Museo Antropologico y de Arte Contemporaneo in Guayaquil, Ecuador during a Fulbright Creative Research Fellowship. this piece is a sibling to ‘gato brujo’, whose form was found on the same pot and are connected by their color and braided texture. recently i’ve realized i make work in pairs, like siblings, possibly because of how I grew up with a close in age little brother who feels more like a twin i was trying to make a piece taller than me, but that could still fit within typical ceiling height, so i aimed to make him 6’2” or taller and for this reason I jokingly call this piece my boyfriend. really, I’d like to see this piece 2 or 4 times its size im interested in giving a new life to these forms, and recirculating the visual language of pre-Colombian latin america. its title are the couple of things I saw this zoomorphic form resembling, but since others have referred to it as a sun as well, which aligns with other depictions of the sun, even on my dad’s old jacket I wear often. I’ve always been a fan of the sun, preferring heat to cold, sitting in a baking car like a sauna on a hot floridian summer day.. Ecuador gets its name from its place on the equator, where everyday the sun rises at 6am and sets at 6pm too and i think about what else its like to live on the center, in the middle of our sphere, interacting with other spheres i think the sun is leading me to other research threads related to stars, space, and astrophysics many thanks to juno @jun.eaux for encouraging me to make this piece and to @jamieseney and @nnomisdmenace for helping me with the grout finish. ｈａｌｏ ｒｉｎｇ steel, hardware, enamel,  15' x12' x 30' 3.2023 🔩🖱️🩶🗜️🪩🔗🕳️ soon on view 9.23 in LA @laartcore halo ring is a monumental and modular steel ring made from 12 foot strips of 16 gauge sheet metal. It is rigid and flexible, delicate while occupying an immense amount of space. It has textured edges being cut from an oxygen-acetylene torch. The natural heat patina is preserved and additional detailing has been added with heat. Viewers are welcome to walk though the ring, acting as a portal. inspired by a smaller piece, 221, halo ring solidifies the rainbow as a full circle 🔘at times seen around the sun or moon 🌑 under certain conditions. 𝓉𝓌𝒾𝓃 𝓈𝒽𝒶𝒹𝑜𝓌 (after 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯), 2023 currently on view @lvl3official during EXPO Chicago 🤎 made @bemiscenter Steel, polyurethane, silicone, grout, pink Himalayan salt, hand dipped beeswax candle by my friend Dez, satin scrunch, hand blown glass, mother-of -pearl fragment gifted from a friend, used violin bow hanks 68” x 35.5” x 41” message @lvl3official to inquire about the work 🪷 °º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸ photo credit @ahuckscarry @lvl3official @bbenherbertt 🫁 in february my mom @alisarviolin came to visit me at @bemiscenter and one night we somehow ended up in a medieval concert in a cathedral. i fell asleep and woke up to graphic, zoomed-in details of bosch’s ‘garden of earthly delights’ and the musicians singing about a unicorn. it was the weirdest thing i think I’ve ever experienced. whenever i think of a unicorn i think of the medieval unicorn tapestries at the met cloisters. i’m not a horse girl, and i’m not a unicorn girl. over the next couple days, i thought of hooves carved from pink himalayan salt, a tail out of used violin 🎻 bow hanks, a pool made of steel, my friend dez’s double-wick candle 🕯️as a horn, and ears of glass. i couldn’t shake these features from my head, so i decided i had to make it. i see this piece as reconciliation between precolombian ceramic artifacts and medieval iconography, the contemporary moment feels a bit medieval (thinking pandemic, recession, fashion trends), the sculpture is an injured baby/ young/ foal unicorn with broken ankles, a bit defensive and scared and scary. °º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸ And thank you To everyone who helped in the process @caseyccallahan @jun.eaux @tatanka.stone @shradermadeglass @randiirenate @dezdreamz and cy amesquita
