A Light Between Rains unfolds across four separate performance sites, beginning almost simultaneously and overlapping with one another before finally reaching the Festival Blocks in a joyous finale. After many discussions, we have made the decision to change our name to Off Root Theatrics. This decision has come out of a lot of reflection on our own positionality within Singapore and the wider region, as well as the kind of work we want to be exploring moving forward. We wanted to stand under a banner that felt more accurately represented the both of us and the relationship to our mixed heritages – being slightly off our own roots. While we have traded out ‘Nusantara’ from our name, we still remain committed to exploring voices, narratives and urgencies from the region. We want to continue to re-examine, be inspired by, adapt and honour our own roots and the relationships it has helped us forge. We have just finished with a group of young and talented actors at LASALLE who underwent a 5-week intensive of our hybrid training. Incorporating elements of Polysensorial Rituals, Imagery, Silat, and Maskwork (PRISM), they have worked very hard to find power in listening to one another, and a strong sense of ownership in both their bodies and their imagination.
