What happens to a sock when it is left behind, its pair gone missing? Our design for Kawata House of Socks speculates on this question by proposing a universe where the solitary sock, abandoned and unmatched, slips into an alternate dimension where feet are the measure of all things, and the world follows a logic that is familiar yet slightly wrong.

Henry Ko Ah Ba, currently 84 years old, is the maternal grandfather of Nai Iyn Huii (@iiiiynnnn ). He was raised by adoptive parents in Pontian, Malaysia, but later moved to Singapore after the war. In the 1960s, alongside his wife Sally Chang Yak Dee, they operated a business akin to a graphic design studio today. Henry was a versatile individual, skilled as a film photographer, calligrapher, and in various other trades. He was renowned for his hand lettering and for painting numerous advertisement boards. At the age of 31, he heeded a calling to become a Taoist priest, now leading his own practice known as the “Hall of Sages” (達人居堂). Today, we feel immensely fortunate to receive his blessings in our humble studio space, marking the first time we have had a physical studio in our careers, continuing a lineage of creative work.
We designed the film title and collaterals for Singapore’s first documentary film about the trans community directed by trans woman filmmaker Quen Wong. Titled “Some Women”, the film produced by Glen Goei made its debut at the Singapore International Film Festival where it bagged the Audience Choice Award.
The title is a handwritten script that conveys the autobiographical aspect of the documentary. For the film poster, we were given permission by Quen to use photos from her childhood. Quen shared that she used stickers to obscure her face as a teenager. We adopted that visual metaphor to engage with discourses related to trans issues such as erasure and gender dysphoria.

We created a project microsite for sonic artist Tini Aliman’s sound walks titled “Exiting-Traversing-Disembark”, part of NTU Centre for Contemporary Art’s Free Jazz III. Soundwalks and aural experiences allow for multiple ways to reflect on the loss of physicalities due to the pandemic, as well as to listen and participate remotely and on-site. The site features audio-visualisations and an abstract map of the soundwalks using lines generated from the audio.

We created the key visual for Esplanade’s first Contemporary Performing Arts Residency. Our design draws on the tradition of graphic notation, utilizing abstract shapes and text typeset on a curved path to suggest movement, rhythm and breath, as well as the internal workings of muscles and musical instruments.

Last year, we had the pleasure to create a microsite for Singapore Institute of Management (SIM)’s Student Involvement Drive. Due to the global pandemic, on-site activities had to be minimised. We wanted to recreate some of the festivities that would have happened at the actual event.
The site features quirky illustrations set in the campus foyer, depicting several clusters based on various student interest groups.

Friends of AFA is a membership program introduced by the Asian Film Archive to encourage patronage of their film programmes.
We created a logotype typeset in a bold san serif typeface accompanied by a contrasting serif typeface. The letter ‘of’ intertwines with the other words, ‘Friends’ and ‘AFA’, bringing the patrons and the archive together, conveying a sense of friendship.
Accompanying the logotype is a set of three graphical symbols carefully designed to represent three different membership tiers (Explorer, Advocate and Friend).

In 2021, we worked together with our alma mater to brand the ADM grad show titled “In New Light”. Some features of the project website includes an interactive 3D component on the landing page, a functional, robust sorting system as well as a randomizing function featuring different works on each refresh.

In 2021, we worked together with our alma mater to brand the ADM grad show titled “In New Light”. Yellow and metallic pantone were chosen as the key colours for the show. Yellow represents the youthful nature of the graduating cohort, whilst metallic pantone supports, reflects and enhances the luminous quality of light. Booklets beautifully printed by @allegro_print

In 2020, we designed “Releases”, a film programme led by the Asian Film Archive dedicated to new films in contemporary Asian cinema. The sparkles within the logotype signifty the “brightest stars” among the latest films in the industry. Alongside the wordmark, we developed a series of social media and print collaterals for the programme.
