When you visit the museum, before you even enter the galleries, there is art all around you! For example, Wall Drawings 450 and 493, two distinct but related wall drawings by Sol LeWitt, that span the wall alongside the stairs leading to our galleries. Seen on the left, Wall Drawing 450 was commissioned for the 1985 Carnegie International. In 1986, LeWitt saw the completed work and decided to extend it with the complementary Wall Drawing 493 Working under instructions provided by the artist, several individuals created these drawings by applying washes of India ink to a primed wall surface. Over time, the ink faded from exposure to sunlight; but in 2007, the drawings were restored to their original color and luminosity using more stable acrylic paints. Sol LeWitt, Wall Drawing 450 A wall is divided vertically into four equal parts. All one-, two-, three-, and four-part combinations of four colors. Installation view, Sol LeWitt, Wall Drawing #450, 1985, Carnegie Museum of Art, gift of Richard M. Scaife to honor Margaret R. Battle, and Wall Drawing #493, 1986, Carnegie Museum of Art, Gift of the artist. Repost from @carnegiemuseumofart . #sollewitt #sollewittwalldrawings #carnegiemuseumofart

The official poster for Spoleto 69, created by Giuseppe Penone, has been unveiled. The image is closely connected to the theme that Daniele Cipriani, Artistic Director, has chosen for the Festival’s upcoming edition: Radici (Roots). A return to origins as a way of imagining the future. The artist selects a detail from Le foglie delle radici (The Leaves of the Roots), an installation in bronze and vegetation nearly 10 meters high that will be displayed in Piazza Pianciani. It will be part of the widespread exhibition that the Festival dei Due Mondi will dedicate to his work. In collaboration with the artist’s studio, from June 27 Anafora at Palazzo Collicola and the installation in the Ex Battistero della Manna d’Oro, curated by Saverio Verini, featuring videos from the Epheméris cycle, presented by the Fondazione Carla Fendi. Announcing ‘The Concentric Influences of Sol LeWitt: Foundations, Pivots and Place, opening at RMIT Gallery on 5 June 2026. Instigated and directed by Dr Irene Barberis (RMIT School of Art), this exhibition emerges from her long-term friendship and mentorship with the esteemed American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt. In the 1960s, LeWitt revolutionised the definition of contemporary art by presenting the simple but radical idea that a work of art’s concept is more important than its form. RMIT Gallery is delighted to centre this exhibition around a LeWitt wall drawing; the first to be publicly exhibited in Victoria since 1977. ‘Concentric Influences’ will showcase the work of an established nucleus of international artists who worked closely with LeWitt during his career: Irene Barberis (AUS), John Hogan (USA), Fransje Killaars (NLD), Janet Passehl (USA), Wilma Tabacco (AUS); with a group of invited contemporary Australian artists: Jonas Balsaitis, Emma Coulter, Sarah Duyshart, Robert Hunter, Robin Kingston, Simon Klose, Sara Lindsay, Jordan Mitchell-Fletcher, Kerrie Poliness, Antonia Sellbach, Jacqueline Stojanović, David Thomas and Anne Scott Wilson. To find out more about this exhibition, head to the link in our bio. - Curated by Irene Barberis with Helen Rayment. The Sol LeWitt wall drawing is generously loaned by the LeWitt family and Estate. This exhibition is presented by RMIT University at RMIT Gallery, in collaboration with Metasenta.
