Nick Miller: 'Red Dust'
College Lane Gallery
Abby St., Howth Co Dublin
1 May- 27 June, 2026
OPENING Saturday May, 16th. 4-6pm
"I am following an urge to express something of this daily play between doing and non-doing. It reflects both streams: paintings that have formed my practice for more than forty
years, and sculptural forms that arise from another, less intentional place. They are connected in the subject matter of unfolding paths of learning—of how to embrace life with greater ease and less unconscious force while navigating the world of Red Dust. There is no perfect way to describe what Taoists call the world of Red Dust. It refers to all things that obscure our way as we navigate the struggles and structures of life, including patterns of upbringing, culture and circumstance buried so deep and apparently insistent in their reality."
'Retreat by the Zhongnan Mountains'
Wang Wei (699-761)
Midway through life I set my heart on Truth
And have come to end my days by the
Southern Hills;
When the mood takes me I stroll out alone,
My pleasure shared by none.
I walk to where the streams rise,
Sit watching as the clouds drift up in the sky,
And meeting with an old man in the woods
Talk and laugh with him, forgetting to return.
deep and apparently insistent in their reality.

晚家南山陲。
興來每獨往,
勝事空自知。
行到水窮處,
坐看雲起時。
偶然值林叟,
談笑無還期。

this dates from when she was living with Max Ernst in a centuries-old farmhouse in the south of France. Carrington was imbued by her Irish maternal grandmother with a love for magic, nature, and shapeshifting entities, and the unicorn figures prominently in that celtic mythology
