“Late Bloomers has a unique blend of comedy and drama, it’s funny about dark things and beautifully honest about life, and I knew the look had to support that tonal range. The story is about young people growing up and older people staying vital, so we wanted the look to have a timeless quality, vintage elements in a modern context. We referenced movies like Frances Ha, Blue Valentine, and The Meyerowitz Stories, all modern day stories that somehow feel out-of-time.
I’ve been making films with Lisa and Anna for years and we’ve developed a shorthand and a trust that I really treasure. Being on set with them is the most pure form of creativity I’ve experienced. Our wonderful line producer Emily McCann Lesser connected me with Chris Bieler at Panavision, and from my first conversation with Chris I understood that collaborating with Panavision is all encompassing.
After testing at Panavision, we decided on the P-Vintage Ultra Speeds, which had that timeless feeling. Something about the falloff, the color tone, the way they render the space, it tweaks reality just a bit and adds this romance to everything. We especially loved the 40mm, it has an amazing subtle warmth to it and it ended up being our go-to for most of the intimate scenes. This was our first time working with Panavision, and it was a dream come true. You can feel the history in each set of lenses.
We were lucky to be able to keep post production in the Panavision family by working with Light Iron. They understood the timeless quality we had gone for in production and really helped us develop that through color. They are masters of the emotional impact that color has on the story and helped us define what certain tones meant in our story specifically. Warmer hues represented Louise’s spaces of comfort and sometimes stagnation, while cooler tones signaled moments of change and transcendence. They’re magicians at Light Iron, and like all great magicians, we don’t know how they did the trick but we feel it’s impact.”
