Having gotten to art direct this film is absolutely a “pinch me” moment. We won an Oscar!!
Moments like this make this confusing, exhausting industry so rewarding. Beautiful films like “The Singers” is why we start and why we stay. Stories, and art, and independent artists will always be worth fighting for.

Was so lucky to collaborate on this image with Ashley. She came to me looking for an image created by hand by a human. I was thrilled to hear another artist fighting for handmade art not generated fully by Ai. She did this despite having limited time and limited budget because if you really want to fight for artists rights you can. All it takes is some guts to go against the grain nowadays. It’s possible - it’s not easy but it’s worth it. Let’s keep handmade art alive.

Cutter 4 Sandwich Man:
As this man was making our sandwich I was reaching over the glass to take a photo in the opposite direction, a candid of a different sandwich maker. Presumably the man at cutter 5. I don’t know why- I think I thought the lighting was better or the angle or something.
So as I was setting up this other photo, the cutter 4 sandwich man playful but loudly goes “hey! I’m makin your sandwich take a photo of me instead!” and points to himself. So I laugh and frame up on him. He holds the sandwich up making sure I get his beautifully crafted creation in the photo.
The photo of cutter 5 man was not nearly as good. Maybe because there was less of a story or connection in it. Less so capturing a moment in favor of lighting. Cutter 4 isn’t a perfect photo- but I quite like it for this anyways
