When light makes a building dance
Sometimes photography is about waiting for that perfect moment - even when the subject stands perfectly still… or does it?
For this shot, I timed it to the exact hour the sun would breathe life into the building - and it was worth every second.

I recently had the opportunity to meet Toronto's mayor, Ms. Olivia Chow, at the opening ceremony for the new affordable housing building by Saint Clare's Multifaith Housing at 1120 Ossington. I designed a collection of openwork shades for the street-facing elevation of the building.

Mask Ring

This ring was commissioned by my client to accompany my sculpture Dream Figure. A woman in a mask is submerged in her hair, which laps around her face like waves.
.
It is based loosely on the Medusa ring, also a commission, which I completed in 2020. That ring was based on the feminist essay Le Rire de la Méduse (The Laugh of the Medusa) by Hélène Cixous, which concerns women's writing. The Mask Ring also draws on a short story a friend of mine wrote about Medusa. In one passage of the story, Medusa's snakes spread out to relax on the surface of the waves while she lies in the ocean.

Abstraction and abstraction. Learned a lot from this piece, which is based on my earlier sculpture "The Well." The bowl, womb-like, fills his torso. Its hollow almost comes out of his back. Full of emptiness. Is he hollow like that without his bowl? Does it reveal, does it carve part of him out, does it obscure something? People as vessels pouring out, vessels as shrines. Painterly statuary with its missing limbs and knurled lines of tension in lieu of musculature, but still soft and alive enough to curl his toes.

A neck that points two chins in two different directions, like the Roman god of priests, and never quite towards the viewer. A heroic figure that points to a Lar. Intermediation on one side, interlocution on the other, and a vessel that produces a vessel.

Nearly all of my jewellery work is collaborative. Someone else usually pours the metal, or sets the stone, or refines the engraving, and so on. In this case my client was a collaborator as well. This is artist @nestor.calligraphy 's engagement ring. His text, a love letter to his fiancée, forms the band.

The setting is a variation of the "teacup" from the "Orchid Teacup Engagement Ring" I made this Spring. A gold setting is, in turn, set into a platinum frame with cut-away arches to allow light through. See how it reflects the text?

The design draws on both Gothic architecture of the middle ages and brutalist architecture from the modern era.

A strong headless man, whose neck would support two faces looking in different directions, holds a heavy bowl that is larger on the inside than the outside. The space contained by the bowl enters into his torso. He holds it as if pouring it out and looks either down at the bowl, or over his shoulder. His gaze, though absent, responds to yours. Draws on imagery of Lares and Janus, Roman deities.

This ring is about travel. The face depicts the sun rising or setting over the sea. The inside depicts the same scene, seen from below water. It is designed after a watch and other jewellery that my client had recently inherited. The composition of the face is based on an antique astrolabe. Note the gold inlay on (and under) the waves.
