In @lenneigh ’s dreamy personal project 377A Wedding she depicts a fantasy queer wedding in her “dystopian homeland” of Singapore, photographed in the style of traditional Chinese weddings. The title of the work alludes to Section 377A of Singapore’s penal code, which criminalizes homosexuality.  Since the work’s creation in 2019, Section 377A has been repealed. Inspired by imagery of student-led political movements in Singapore in the past, and SAMBAL (Singaporean And Malaysian Bisexual women And Lesbians) – an online discussion group that participated in LGBT marches in San Francisco in the early 90s – what would growing up in Singapore be like if civil discourse and peaceful protests were encouraged in school life? Public assemblies, demonstrations and protests are activities regulated by the Public Order Act, a law enforced in Singapore by the police - so imagine my surprise when friends from abroad shared their experiences in organising demonstrations, or being a part of school-mandated protests. What would school life look like if LGBTQIA+ CCAs existed in secondary schools? Could acceptance and inclusivity be normalised? Seeing @leraabova on @onepiecenetflix took me back to this dreamy week I spent with @netflix for Geeked Week 2024 – what a treat!
