It was UnBelizable 🖤🤍💛🇧🇿✨ #BelizeCumpleaños #LanIanLayover A little history on Belize: “Belize’s cultural and historical landscape is shaped by the intertwined legacies of its Indigenous peoples and the African diaspora, particularly the Garífuna. The Mopan, Qʼeqchiʼ (Kekchi), and Yucatec Maya migrated from Guatemala and the Yucatán region into Belize during the 18th and 19th centuries to escape persecution, forced labor, land dispossession, and widespread violence tied to Spanish colonial rule and later regional conflicts. The Mopan fled repeated oppression and village destruction, the Qʼeqchiʼ escaped brutal plantation labor systems and land seizures in Guatemala, and the Yucatec Maya sought refuge from the Caste War of Yucatán, a period marked by massacres and pillaging of Indigenous communities. In Belize, these groups established new settlements where they preserved their languages, agricultural traditions, spiritual practices, and communal ways of life, forming the foundation of the country’s Indigenous identity and resilience. Alongside them, the Garífuna people arrived in Belize in the early 1800s after being exiled by British colonial forces from St. Vincent, carrying a powerful cultural legacy rooted in African, Indigenous, and Caribbean heritage expressed through music, dance, foodways, and collective resistance. Together, Belize’s Indigenous and Garífuna histories tell a living story of survival, migration, and cultural continuity that continues to shape the nation’s identity today.” Music by: Andy Palacio who is remembered as one of Belize’s most popular and influential musicians and remains a powerful voice for Garifuna culture and identity. He was a leading activist for the Garifuna people and the creator of the Garifuna Music Collective, using music to preserve language, history, and tradition while sharing it with the world. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 48, but his legacy continues to ensure Garifuna culture is not only protected, but actively celebrated and passed down to future generations.

🌿🎨 From Blank Wall to Neighborhood Gem 🎨🌿 The incredible @el_cekis continues to transform city walls into living canvases. This striking mural, bold, vibrant, and full of life, is a reminder of how art connects community, culture, and nature. 🐆✨ Created in partnership with Jersey City Mural Arts Program (@jcmap ) and New City Parks (@newcityparks ), this work is more than paint on a wall. It’s a gift to the neighborhood. #ElCekis #JerseyCityMuralArts #NewCityParks #PublicArt #StreetArt #CommunityArt #JerseyCity #LeopardMural #MuralsMatter #ArtThatInspires #UrbanCanvas #Muralist #BehindTheScenes #CreativeProcess #JCMurals

Couldn’t be prouder of my friend @mikey.cordero for bringing ‘La Sala Libre’ via @diaspo.rico to life at @CasaSaffra in Santurce. Walking through it feels like stepping into his family’s living room, rooted, warm, and full of Boricua heart 🇵🇷. It’s more than art - it’s truly a declaration of Puerto Rican sovereignty and cultural self-expression. Located at @CasaSaffra , Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico, the residency runs August 1 to September 14. If you’re in town for the Bad Bunny residency, this is your chance to connect with culture and community before the show. 🌺🤍🇵🇷
