The mural “Dream Bigger Dreams” at Williams and West Side Ave depicts famous people with ties to Jersey City including Flip Wilson, Nathan Lane, Michelle Rodriguez, and Akon. Painted by artists The Rorshach, consisting of Andre León and Robert Ramone. To brothers that came up in the gritty and beautiful Newark, New Jersey. Like other inner city kids from around the world, their focus was solely on circumventing the obstacles set against them. They are both from deeply rooted immigrant Latino households and, despite not being bonded by blood, formed a connection at a young age. #jerseycity @jcmap@jcartandculture@rorshachart@akon@mrrodofficial
Nelson Cekis and team paint “Wild Journey”, a series of murals in the lower level of the Journal Square PATH Station as part of a #JerseyCity Mural Art Project and in collaboration with the NY/NJ Port Authority. Cekis's career as a visual artist began in the city streets of his native Santiago, Chile. He started painting murals while in high school, and was inspired by the New York graffiti culture and Chile’s social mural propaganda of the 1980's.

Another testament to the hard work the Jersey City Youth Mural Arts Program has done over the last 10 years to beautify our city. The third mural, “How Many Lives,” created by our talented youth in 2017 at the West Side Avenue Light Rail station, continues to stand as a powerful symbol of change. Under the guidance of mentors Duda Penteado and Catherine Hart, 25 aspiring artists transformed a 180-foot wall into a striking public artwork that addresses the profound impact of gun violence. Throughout the mural’s creation, the students engaged in meaningful discussions about their art and its personal significance. Here’s to the lasting impact of creativity and community!
Join us in the continued celebration of 10 years of the JCYMap Program! Check out our second mural, ‘Aqualand,’ painted at 32 Bishop Street in 2016. Over six weeks, 18 talented Jersey City youth alongside their mentors Duda Penteado and Catherine Hart transformed the 150,000-square-foot building with a vibrant depiction of aquatic life.
The JCMAP Youth Program strengthens design, drawing & painting skills, and enhances the professionalism and employability of Jersey City’s emerging young artists.
The level of mentorship & individualized guidance that program coordinators Duda Penteado and Catherine Hart have provided to over 200 Jersey City youth in the last 10 years is invaluable.
Over the next few weeks we will be celebrating the 10 Year Anniversary of this program by sharing the 9 murals that have been created across the city.
The first mural created by the Jersey City Youth Mural Arts Program was “Naturemorphosis” a beautification project that took the underutilized Fulton Park and helped it truly come to life.
