Who else is looking forward to the rerelease of the Crepes tomorrow? I personally love when Nike pays homage to the classics without making one-to-one retros. To be honest, the one feature that gives the Crepe its name is possibly its worst. I’ve never been a fan of the Crepe sole, so I wasn’t completely devastated when my OG soles disintegrated. Stupidly I looked to the Crepe Bursts as a donor with my limited intelligence. Here’s a free tip to you all, when your 2004 Air Max’s start to crumble, don’t sole swap them with a pair from the same year. I got two wears out of this Frankenstein pair before these soles crumbled too. Back in June of 2006 marketing genius @ari decided to amplify the synergies between Nike’s “Swoosh” and Newport Cigarette’s “Spinnaker” graphic devices and release 252 pairs of the Ari Menthol 10s based on the Air Force One. From the outstanding cigarette packaging concept, to the Ari/Air anagram, the whole project was pure genius. I think we all have one or two of those “the ones that got away” stories, and I can remember the exact time and location where I realised I’d forgotten to up my bid on a pair of the Menthols on eBay back in 2010 (I rank it up there with DJ AM’s pair of UNDFTD Entourage AF1s in terms of big Ls I’ve had). . Of all the Nike iDs/Nike By You that I have, I can honestly say this is my favourite pair. Dave’s Quality Meat (DQM) was the brainchild of creative genius @123dortiz who - having worked with Zoo York - launched his store in New York’s meat packing district in 2003. A year later he teamed up with Nike to create one of the most iconic Air Max 90s of all time, the ‘Bacons’. DQM weren’t on my radar however until 2006 with their R1 adicolor collab with adidas (which I collected exclusively back then). But I soon dug deeper and discovered their Bacon collab, which led me to open up my collecting to brands beyond adidas. Here I have swapped out the browns for a richer berry colour, and swapped the brown soles for my favoured gum - but I feel the essence of the original Bacons still shines through. . When you talk about Air Max collaborations through the years, I would argue that two names sit clearly at the top, Tokyo’s Atmos and of course Amsterdam’s Patta. Back in 2009, Patta celebrated their 5th Anniversary with a pack of 4 outstanding Air Max 1s including the Chlorophylls, the Purple Denims, the Corduroys and the Lucky Greens. A sample version of the Lucky Greens saw the shoes black and white canvas colours reversed. Almost impossible to find good pictures of online, but thankfully @desneakerreiniger.nl was tasked with giving them a good clean prior to their inclusion in the Amsterdam Museum and got this great shot. With a rumoured 3 pairs in existence the chance of getting my hands on a pair was pretty unlikely, so I did the next best thing and created a replica using Nike iD’s canvas options (and a spot of green paint). . One of my favourite pairs of Air Max 1s are Huf’s 2007 ‘Hufquakes’ which were a commemoration of the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. I’m happy to have 2 pairs of Hufquakes, but not so happy that my worn pair is a victim of midsole crumble. I made up this iD pair for one reason, to give up their life and donate their soles.
