Years ago, when I learned that there was a Black
@f1 driver who was crushing the competition AND showing up to the track in custom Dior, I obviously became a fan. But in the time since, I’ve come to admire
@lewishamilton for far more than his deft driving and sartorial prowess. Whether wearing a tee emblazoned with the phrase “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor” or unflinching calling out racism when he sees it, the motorsport star stands firm in his beliefs—regardless of how uncomfortable it makes some people. I’m also endlessly impressed by Lewis’s
@mission44 foundation, which is exposing young people of all backgrounds to STEM studies, and providing them with educational and career opportunities they may otherwise not have. (The chief development officer of Mission44 happens to be my dear friend
@jelfy , who I met ages ago when we were both
@teachforamerica teachers in Houston. So serendipitous.)
Ahead of the 2025 Met Gala, I spoke to Lewis about fashion, history, racing, and what it means to him to be co-chairing a night dedicated to the Black dandy. His words were so poignant that I just went with those. The result was this as-told-to cover story for Vogue. Much like the looks Lewis’s stylist
@ericjmcneal pulls for the driver, it was a conversation I’ll never forget. | Link in bio
