Our Urban Planning & Design Internship Program was hosted at Long beach City College’s Trades, Technology , and Community Learning (TTC) campus for a great discussion on community-driven planning. Our panelists, Prof, of Architecture Lilliana Castro and Urban Planners Erika Barbero-Molina and Tony Lopez provided our interns with valuable insight on what defines community planning for our built environment, its importance, and how you measure success. A special thanks to Prof. Castro for hosting us at their newly constructed Building MM at the TTC campus. #LongBeachCommunityDesignCenter #LongBeachCityCollege #CivicConfidenceLLC #CityofLongBeach #BikeLA

Last Wednesday we had an incredible turnout for the Green Schoolyard Pilot Project at the Starr King Elementary Open House. Parents and students explored early conceptual ideas of what a greener, more vibrant school yard could look like. Families shared their thoughts, asked great questions, and voted on their favorite design features helping shape the direction of this project. This open house is just the first of several engagement events that will bring together students, parents, teachers, staff, and the surrounding community. A huge thank you to the dedicated planning team for making this possible: @cityfabrick , @groundeducation , @neighborhoodlandtrust , and @puentelbc . This collaboration is helping create a healthier, more inspiring outdoor environment for students to learn and play in North Long Beach. #LongBeachUnifiedSchoolDistrict #GreenSchoolYard

What a wonderful experience for our interns to hear from a panel of urban planning and place making experts Aaron Lobliner from Michael Baker International, Alison Spindler-Ruiz at City of Long Beach, and Rodrigo Rodarte of Downtown Long Beach Alliance. The interns learned about the importance of professional relationships and networking in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. #LongBeachCommunityDesignCenter #MichaelBakerInternational #CityofLongBeach #DowntownLongBeachAlliance #LBWIN

The Urban Planning and Design interns toured Alta Sea at the Port of Los Angeles and were exposed to the education, science, business of the Blue Economy. The reach of Alta Sea is both local and global and interns got to interact with active business incubators as well as learn about the vital connection between the marine and physical environments. Special thanks to Alta Sea and Janet Parga for their hospitality and support of our program. #altasea #longbeachcommunitydesigncenter #civicconfidence #cityoflongbeach #communitydevelopmentlongbeach #planningbureaulongbeach #longbeachWIN

This past week we engaged our interns on a very different type of planning/design discussion. The subject was Designing Theme Parks lead by my colleague Nathan Amondson, Production Designer. It was a great discussion, and the interns explored the parallels between theme park design and urban planning, especially in placemaking. Also presented were the examination and transferability of theme park strategies to public urban environments and the steps in the creative process. #amondson #longbeachcommunitydesigncenter #civicconfidence #longbeachcity #DTLBdesigndistrict

This past Saturday we held our first LBC Park Equity workshop, engaging the Latino community to close the park equity divide. This workshop was in partnership with Trust for Public Land and Long Beach Parks, Recreation & Marine. Prominent themes included family, neighborhood, green-space, community, and accessibility. This workshop was the first of four, focusing on the different ethnic groups in LBC to provide collaborative input from underserved communities. The following workshops will highlight the Filipino, African American, and Cambodian communities. Our next workshop will be held on Saturday, February 1st at Harte Neighborhood Library focusing on the Filipino Community. [email protected]
