‘Caroline’, oil on wood panel (2026) My second time painting Caroline, eight years after the first while I was studying abroad in Copenhagen. I wish I was being modest when I say the first portrait was terrible but it really was, so it’s been nice to get a second chance. It’s been hard to find the time to paint recently, but I’m happy with how I see my work progressing in this portrait. #art #artist #portrait #portraits #portraiture oilportrait oilportraiture oilpainting painting artistsoninstagram artistsofinstagram

A year in the length of a song. Really more for me (or anyone wanting long-form media! I didn’t want to edit it down any further). This year has been challenging, rewarding, full of opportunities, and loaded with music, art and crazy obsessions. Four concerts, three choir solos, two trips abroad, and one incredible journey through Portrait Artist of the Year. These are really only the moments I (or others) remembered to photograph. Many of the most impactful ones are impossible to pin down, except in my memory. Here’s to more capturable and uncapturable times in 2026 (the start of my 30s, eek!). Happy Hogmanay! 🎆

What a wonderful way to end 2025! I’m so proud of the great exhibition my fellow PAOTY semifinalists and I were able to put together at Noho Showrooms, London, this week. It was my first real exhibition, having only previously had individual pieces shown in open call exhibitions. Not bad for the first! @thenohogalleries @chloe_barnes_artist @katiejones_somerset @courtneybaeartist @paulina.kwietniewska.paintings @eboundart @uthmanwahaab Photos 1+2: @maison_lewis

The winner and finalists of this year’s Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year are joining forces to deliver a unique masterclass in portraiture. Happening next August just outside Scarborough in a delightful old mansion that once belonged to the chocolatier Joseph Rowntree, this series of individual masterclasses also double up as a fantastic getaway/retreat. Chloe, Katie and Lauren each have very different approaches to portraiture ensuring your time spent with them will be fruitful and deeply educational. After a hard day’s graft, you will relax in the main house where evening events will be available for you to attend after dinner, or why not explore the lush gardens, just a stone’s throw from the gorgeous North Yorkshire coastline. WOW! What a final to the 2025 series of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year. We’d like to extend a massive congratulations to Chloe Barns for becoming this year’s winner with an amazing final portrait of actor Brian Cox. We also wanted to say congratulations to Lauren Ross and Katie Jones for making it to the end and beating some tough competition. They have both created some amazing work throughout the series and should be very proud of making it to the final. ⭐️ But now for the bit we’re most excited about. We’re delighted to announce that ALL THREE of the finalists of this year’s Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year will be joining us at Cober Hill in August 2026 for a four-night Portrait with the Masters residential. You will check-in at Cober Hill from 3pm on Monday 24th August 2026, then join us for complimentary drinks from 5pm where you will meet your fellow participants and tutors. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday is all about mastering different approaches to capturing a portrait. You will spend a day with each of our guest tutors - Chloe, Lauren and Katie - with each delivering a unique portrait masterclass focused on a different medium. During this time, your tutors will share with you valuable tools and techniques to master your own portrait painting and drawing. On Friday after breakfast there will be an opportunity for you to share the work you have created during the week, exchange feedback and enjoy lunch before departing Cober Hill. We can’t tell you how excited we are to be able to share news of this amazing residential and we do recommend you book early to secure your place as we think this one will go pretty quickly. ‘Cerys by Lamplight’ (2025), oil on wood panel. When I heard I was through to the final of Portrait Artist of the Year, one of the things I was most excited about was getting the chance to make this. It was for sure the most challenging of all the portraits I made throughout the competition, only to be compared with writing uni dissertations, with me close to collapse at 4am the morning of the deadline. I’ve made a couple of tweaks since the show, and there’s still things about it I’d ideally change, but I’ll leave it as is now. I’m happy with it overall. Fyi, it’s best seen by lamplight. Thank you to @cerysscoreycelf for being my muse. ‘every flicker of every emotion every pattern of muscular tension it is a form of love, this kind of seeing, the feeling eye not eye as mere measuring instrument but something more integral and involved’ — excerpt from a poem by the typewriter poet at London’s Southbank, featured in the painting #art #artist #painting #portrait #portraiture #portraitart #oilportrait #oilpainting #artistsofinstagram #artistoftheyear #portraitartistoftheyear #paoty @artistoftheyear

What a way to end a phenomenal experience! The final challenge was way harder than the heat and the semifinal, and it felt like half the amount of time, but I’m proud of trying my absolute hardest the whole way through to try to make the most out of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It was a privilege to meet the esteemed Brian Cox @coxusa and an absolute pleasure working beside @katiejones_somerset and @chloe_barnes_artist again. The biggest thanks to @storyvaultfilms for making it all less stress and more fun with the warmth and support of all the crew. The comments my art received from the judges will stay with me and propel me on to believe in the work I can produce, so the sincerest thank you to @katebryan_art , @kathleen.soriano and @taishanschierenberg . It’s also been amazing and truly heartwarming to have gotten so many lovely comments from people in the audience and later online about my work, so thank you to those people as well, I really appreciate it! I’d say I managed to get this painting about 40% done, imagining when I’d stop if I had all the time in the world, but I’m relatively satisfied with the way it was going when time was up, even though it was incomplete. If I had been thinking practically, I would have gone smaller and more focused in on the face, but somehow I still don’t regret the scale and composition I chose, only that I couldn’t work faster. I had plans for ways to integrate aspects of Brian’s old family photographs into the fabric behind, but I realised that probably would’ve taken about 4hrs in itself, so I couldn’t weave any narrative into this one sadly, but that was the intention. @artistoftheyear #art #portrait #portraiture #portraitpainting #oilportrait #oilportraiture #oilpainting #artist #artists #artistsofinstagram

Four hours in 30secs. Why oh why did I leave the face til last? Well, from fear of messing up, but it turned out alright in the end, nowhere near finished but alright. And perhaps added some jeopardy to the show. Although it was stressful, it was also a lot of fun and an absolute privilege! @artistoftheyear #art #portrait #portraiture #portraitart #portraitpainting #artist #oilportrait #artistsofinstagram
